Yeah, I saw that. It makes an intersting read that it was Ecclestons choice to leave Doctor Who. Which surprised me, I always thought it was something Russell T. Davies wrote in from the start for the sake of showing a Regeneration.
Eccleston is a private man though, I think all the fan attention was too much for him. Although the way that article reads it seems there were some internal problems too, no doubt the gruelling shooting schedule.

In the commentaries Russell mentioned that it was Christopher's choice.

Always those interviews whet your appitite but never seem to answer the questions they raise. I'd love to see Eccleston do a full interview about what he didn't like and why he left. Not being in England, I had no idea who Tennent and Smith were before they started the role but Eccleston had a bit more international exposure. I thought he made an excellent Doctor and put his own stamp on the role from his first few lines in Rose.

He didn't "leave". He didn't want to do more than one season - that's completely different than leaving.

But then, it's pretty much been the case with every Doctor.
You don't want famous celebrity actors playing roles in which you want the role to be important, rather than the actor themselves.

It probably was the gruelling work and shooting schedule that proved too much to bear. It is a looooonnng shoot, Dr Who of today, with little time off. Christopher probably felt enough was enough. In an interview when shooting was finishing or had finished, Chris was asked if he was in for the long haul, to which he replied something like "I've done it, this is the long haul!"
