This is a rather unpolished idea, inspired by real events.
My eldest brother retired early from the Civil Service on medical grounds. His wife found him underfoot and suggested he join a golf club, despite decades of more-or-less blameless life1 without ever bashing a small white ball around.
Discovering a dire need for organisation he used the talents that had brought him to AS grade to running the place and has been secretary for several years. He even plays occasionally. Recently some planned renovations led to the discovery of two secret rooms under the main clubhouse2 which had been used, until a few years ago, for certain illegal purposes. They had been well hidden, obviously during a renovation decades ago.
This got me thinking. Assistance, ideas and contributions are welcome.
The Twentieth Hole.
It all began, as far as that is applicable to time travel, in 2038. But also in 1926. These thing do happen this way, in a universe with faster-than-light and temporal travel causality is somewhat optional, despite the best efforts of Time to maintain a sense of order.
Summary.
Two time travellers establish a hidden base under the clubhouse of a gold club.
That's when the club is, probably, bought and/or remodelled.
The new owner has problems, due to the improperly shielded experiments. He discovers the goings on in the basement and interferes
The trio get stranded in the far future of Earth, mostly underpopulated. I'm thinking 7167, during the solar flares era. Or possibly 16077.
Dramatis Personae.
Two young women, both brilliant, both convinced they're right.
Evelyn ‘Evie’ Turner was a brilliant student. After completing her doctorate inn 2036 she was investigating the unusual properties of certain gravity waves and discovered that one of the other research teams in the University of Edinburgh was also working along similar lines. She was curious about their activities.
Until the soldiers arrived. Suddenly the researchers disappeared and the laboratory was closed, locked down.
And no-one asked questions.
She was intrigued, what was going on?
Elsa Blake, often called Bess, much to her annoyance, was a graduate from the University of Oxford (1924, the fourth year they were awarded. No more ‘steamboat ladies’.). One of the rare students of physics in that institution. A brilliant mind, restricted by the endemic sexism of the period. She’d show them all…..
So she started building a time machine.
The pair met each other in March of 1926, just a week beore the equinox. After a few moments of paranoia, and pistols being brandished.
Ideas? Suggestions?
1. Well he did once sledgehammer a bank's door open, but that was business.
2. And not small ones, about forty square metres each.
Bottom.

- Probably in the 1920s.
- Probably the UK, though the USA is possible. I'm not familiar enough with period, say, France to be happy with using that background.
