History has been changed. Across the ages, various sleuths and criminal investigators have been found dead. Dyke Darrel, Lady Molly, Doctor Morelle and the genetic quirk that is Detective Chimp. Slaughtered before their appointed time at the hands of some mysterious assailant.
Who is responsible? And what of the mysterious symbols left at the scene of each crime?
Time for your PCs to investigate.
Note: This adventure seed was inspired by the fact that a lot of classic literary detectives seem to fit not just well into the universe of Who but also the DWAITAS RPG as well. This is also the sort of adventure that could be a one and done or merely part of a campaign long arc which involves some great conspiracy.

I imagine without the involvement of certain sleuths, quite a few villains and criminals would be able to get away with their crimes which could cause all manner of unforeseen changes to history. Perhaps the assassin or force is currently working for the Trickster? With the sacrifices and symbols left at each scene serving as part of some great equation which when solved may release him? It wouldn’t mean every criminal would get away scott free, of course. I imagine in some instances certain other detectives would step into the fray in the absence of others. Not to mention, such alterations to history would risk setting back amateur criminology by decades in the process.

The mysterious death of a certain Belgian gentleman will certainly cause a ruckus. The death of a little old lady in Mary St. Mead, however, will probably go unnoticed by the majority.
Friendly greetings, Horus Lupercal.

Oh please say Jessica Fletcher survives though I would love for her to be a companion in the adventure!

I imagine a particularly clever or plucky group of PCs would be able to determine a pattern for these killings and discover just who the assailants or group of assailants are after next.
Personally, depending on the exact nature of the threat involved I could see either the slain sleuths being restored to life or perhaps resurrected or rather preserved as works of fiction within the Land of Fiction. The latter, of course, would have to involve some cosmic shenanigans though.

the slain sleuths being restored to life Maybe via a temporal thing. Like the assassins were from the future and were people who were thwarted by descendants of the sleuths, or people inspired by them, and therefore decided to steal a time machine to go back in time and kill the sleuths. And therefore the PCs have to work out how to combat this, either by working out which was the first kill or some other way around it.

I do like the idea of there being some cabal or group of wealthy individuals who intend to avenge their ancestors by murdering the detectives who apprehended them. Might even be a rite of initiation for potential new members. Of course, as the PCs will soon realise as well as altering the history of amateur criminology the group are also at risk of damaging their own existence!

If they end up in Midsomer County, the question is more will they succeed or will they be found dead in strange circumstances (which Inspector Barnaby will muse about).
Friendly greetings, Horus Lupercal.

Hmm. Maybe this village is entirely populated by figures who resemble famous detectives throughout history. Many of them who have rather mundane professions but who have had their memories of their true selves suppressed for some reason. A village where crime and other such vile behaviour is practically unheard of. It might take a mystery on the part of the PCs to awake them from their stupor. But just who is responsible for this?

Of course, whoever constructed this plan didn’t take into account that it was always doomed to failure. No virtual reality or simulated environment could possibly sustain itself under the collected investigatory prowess and shared eccentricities of all these sleuths. Perhaps the detectives constantly figure out the truth and try to escape but the environment constantly resets itself to try and keep them trapped. (Marking this adventure when the PCs get involved as merely the 450th try in a long line of escape attempts) Which begs the question. Why? And for what purpose? Could it be that instead of an outside party, this village is actually the creation of one of the sleuths themselves?

Wasn't Tom Barnaby (original Barnaby) a former member of MI5? He was probably snatched as soon as he retired along with his wife and that's the real reason why we haven't heard about in the current seasons.
Friendly greetings, Horus Lupercal.
