While I’ve been taking a break from the boards, I’ve been re reading the seminal and excellent Italian work “The Adventures of Pinocchio” Outside out of its adaptation by Disney (long before they became a black hole of a corporation but, I digress...) it’s a marvellous if a trifle violent book and one which struck me as ripe for RP potential or at least to serve as the seeds for inspiration.
Throughout his misadventures, Pinocchio finds himself in the strangest of lands such as Catchfools, a town where every animal in town has done something exceedingly foolish and now suffers as a result and the sinister Land of Toys. As well as encountering characters ranging from the bizarre to the horrific from the thieving Fox and Cat to the Green Fishermen.
Now, there a few ways you could go about this in terms of using them for the DW RPG. You could either do a campaign akin to ‘The Chase’ or ‘The Keys of Marinus’ where a PC or several PCs acting in the role of Pinocchio go on random adventures, stumbling from place to place and regularly getting into trouble. With, of course, the possibility of having your PCs encounter some Who mainstays along the way.
Another (perhaps more obvious) approach would be to have the story’s original writer Carlo Collodi in the role of companion with the adventures he embarks on alongside the PCs serve as the inspiration for his eventual work. It’s a similar idea we once broached for L.Frank Baum where the creatures he would meet after accidentally being abducted by Doctor Marshall Manor Meyer would serve as the inspiration for the denizens of Oz.
Or having an ersatz Pinocchio be a recurring NPC for whom the PCs regularly encounter across their travels and who they have to constantly get out of trouble.

Hmm, you could adapt it a little bit, have Pinocchio be a tree in the Forest of Cheem, maybe one that was ready to become sentient however was carved into its Pinocchio form. I like your idea of a "The Keys of Marinus" or "The Chase" style story though and could just as easily be adapted as an adventure set in the Land of Fiction as well.

A sapling carved into a more humanoid form and without the teachings of its progenitors it has a rather reckless and carefree (bordering on hopelessly naive) personality. No doubt at the end of its introductory adventure it would leave the planet by becoming a stowaway on a harvester ship or something. Leaving room for further adventures or even if your PCs want to play moral guardians and chase after him. Having some of the more unscrupulous characters in the story (and believe me, there are plenty!) appear in the Land of Fiction would also work as well. I could imagine the Fox and the Cat attempting to lead a few of the PCs on a merry dance before attempting to rob them.

Honestly a Pinocchio in space with a Tree of Cheem as Pinocchio made into a humanoid form sounds like it could work. To be honest I am very unfamiliar with Pinocchio though but does sound like I need to give it a read, if we are going by a kind of space Pinocchio the way you describe the Fox and The Cat gives me a kind of space pirate vibes who rather than board and plunder ships they allow people onto their ship and then mug them and board their ship and plunder then.

It’s definitely worth a read, I think. Although it’s extremely violent in parts with dismemberments a plenty so be warned. They are a lot of ways you could adapt the Pinocchio story to DW. The Talking Cricket could be some AI or robot which tags along with the wooden boy for who he unfortunately rarely listens to.

I will try and give it a read sometime probably will add it to my reading list if and when i get back into reading more ha ha however I will certainly give it a read. You are right a lot of other works can be adapted and I can see this one as working well. Talking cricket can also be of an alien species as well.

Any one will do considering the story is, I believe in the public domain, so it shouldn’t be too hard to find a copy. And yes, indeed. I also thought Sinbad the Sailor would work as a good basis for a recurring NPC with the adventures he used to go on.

Furniture? Might make for a dark story actually the idea of Trees of Cheem being turned into these wooden objects and being used, kind of like the Ood maybe?

Lots of rather dark possibilities.I could see a serial killer with a fixation on the residents of the Forest of Cheem disposing of their victims that way. Carving them up and then moulding them into wooden trinkets which they sell on. Only a family member or an expert in Cheem physiology would be able to spot the distinctive features which highlight how these were once living, breathing trees. Otherwise it’s just quality craftsmanship.

The Terrible Dogfish could be some ravenous and strangely aggressive Star Whale which roams the universe attacking unwary travellers. (You could also include a reference to Moby Dick with a Captain Ahab figure as well?)
Whereas the Land of Toys could either be a plan of the Celestial Toymaker who has expanded his Celestial Toyroom or even a psychic moon which is keeping the person who runs said land alive by being constantly fed the souls of children?
