Time. I'm sure most of the members here are familiar with the webcomic xkcd (wiki). If you're not feel free to pop over and give it a try, we'll still be here in a few days. Time (xkcd comic 1190; wiki) is considered Randall Munroe's Magnum Opus1; rather than a single image it was actually an animation of 3,102 frames that followed a couple of stick-figure people who go on a journey.
The strip is set approximately eleven thousand years in the future in the region that is now the Mediterranean Sea, though in fourteenth millennium it is again a dry basin. That is until the story, during which the Zanclean Deluge (wiki) reoccur and drastically alters life. The animation features two characters ('Cueball' and 'Megan') building sandcastles and going on journey uphill to discover where the rising water comes from; along the way they find a castle, encounter a big cat, meet a different civilisation and return home to save their people.
A perfect Who plot really. Just add in a few PCs, and a few more encounters and some left-overs from previous civilisations to make a proper quest, perhaps like The Keys of Marinus.
The entire story can be watched here. Monroe's blog entry is here. There is more detail here, though for exhaustive detail Time has a dedicated wiki here.
1. It won the 2014 Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story.
