Having recently reread the original John Wyndham novel and currently watching the fairly good television series, it struck me that the premise would make for a good basis for a DW/UNIT focused game.
So here’s the premise:
An ordinary village (The fictional Midwich in the novel but for the purpose of fitting it into the Whoniverse let’s call
It Stockbridge) is struck by a mysterious phenomenon. Whoever enters the region, villagers included all suddenly fall unconsciousness.
After a period of time, they all sudden awaken to discover that all the women of child bearing age have fallen mysteriously and unexpectedly pregnant.
When the children are born, they appear normal aside from possessing several unusual characteristics such as golden eyes, light blonde hair, and pale, silvery skin. With the area quickly locked off from the rest of the country and placed until the control/supervision of UNIT they soon quickly discover that the children are more than they appear. They’re highly telepathic, capable of controlling others and appear linked together by some hive mind. If one of them learns something, then the others do as well.
As their powers increase, the villagers soon feel threatened necessitating the Children to fight back and defend themselves resulting in many an injury and even one death.
So there we have it, a scenario that needs very little alteration to work.
Personally, if I were to run it I’d already have the PCs familiar with Stockbridge. Perhaps they already know longtime resident Maxwell Edison? So when they arrive, say long after the Children were born, they’d be struck by the strange oppressive atmosphere of the village and slowly but surely discover the truth behind what has gone on here in this once quiet village.
Also be a chance for UNIT to be presented as somewhat of an antagonistic force which would make for a different change of pace if your PCs are already acquainted with them as allies.
Further Adventure Ideas
* Obviously one of the biggest questions posed by the novel and one which is thankfully left unexplained is just who is responsible for the Cuckoos? Some alien race trying to birth a new species or possibly an experiment gone awry?
* The novel ultimately reveals that said pregnancies have occurred in other parts of the world. All of which ended in tragedy and destruction on a grand scale. What are the stories behind those pregnancies? And is there for a chance for them to happen again?
