Inspired by some discussion in grinch's Mortimus thread, here's an idea I had some time ago but never developed or returned to: Mawdryn Reborn!
(As a note I probably should re-watch Mawdryn Undead to see if I mis-remember any details)
Instead of being killed by the Blinovitch Limitation Effect discharge of temporal energy, Mawdryn is actually infused with energy and regenerates (probably off-screen) instead of dying (blame the energy being filtered through the Doctor). He survives as a Scion of Gallifrey (more-or-less, he can't regenerate again, for example) and heads off to explore the universe and atone for his earlier selfish and kinds stupid behaviour.
Now we don't know a lot about Mawdryn and his cohorts. They were technologically advanced to the level where they could achieve time travel, dimensional engineering and hope to understand Time Lord science. Yes the Fifth Doctor Sourcebook lists him as Tech Level 6 but I think that's nonsense. TL-8 is more reasonable. He (I'll ignore the other seven) was a scientist from an advanced humanoid species. They could actually be future humans, perhaps linked to the whole Ravalox business, who've travelled back in time.
After regenerating Mawdryn uses parts from the main ship to convert the transmat capsule into a TARDIS analogue and heads off.
I'm inclined to put his first stop as Earth, perhaps indeed landing at Brendon Public School (which might be a co-ed Academy if his visit is a few decades after the events with the Doctor). There he solves some problem and acquires a companion (not Hippo Ibbotson) or companions.
Ideas? Comments? Suggestions?

Now I’m just wondering if he still looks like David Collings after regenerating.
In any case, I like the idea of him acting as a proto-Doctor and not always getting it exactly right.

Now I’m just wondering if he still looks like David Collings after regenerating. Definitely. He has the manic blue eyes. Also I loved him as Silver. In any case, I like the idea of him acting as a proto-Doctor and not always getting it exactly right. Absolutely, 'fools rush in where angels fear to tread'.

I think Mawdryn should keep his ship and use that to travel with. It seems advanced enough to take the character almost anywhere and who doesn't want to travel the universe in comfort I agree with the Tech Level jump to 8, an argument could be made for 9 as well. Just enough to understand Time Lord tech but missing the finer points. just enough to be dangerous. The school could also have some hidden Time Agent tech as well. Maybe a renegade Time Agent could become a companion ?

Then again perhaps he re-engineered it inside.
The capsule was vastly larger on the inside, one of the reasons for Mawdryn being from a TL-8 society, anyway. I agree with the Tech Level jump to 8, an argument could be made for 9 as well. Just enough to understand Time Lord tech but missing the finer points. just enough to be dangerous. Exactly. The school could also have some hidden Time Agent tech as well. Maybe a renegade Time Agent could become a companion ? Who knows who might be hiding out there? One of the EU audios has at least one other Trion exile there.

I was recently watching Iron Man 3. The main villain and a few henchmen have the ability for massive regeneration with a bit of flare. I was thinking how cool Mawdryn would be with similar abilities. Not the flaming breathing or heating up materials, and just the regeneration. Of course, a hole in the chest seems to kill still.

That has potential, somewhat like JH's ability to survive massive trauma, a useful ability for a self-proclaimed hero....

I could see Mawdryn taking on a scientist as a travelling companion. Possibly a geneticist? Mainly because I think both the companion and Mawdryn would be interested in seeing the limits of his healing abilities. He might actually be closer to what makes a Time Lord (at least in terms of his biology) than say River Song or Lake’s lot.
