An amazing episode! I was really enjoying it from the start, thinking it was a really good episode, then about halfway through it really shifted into high gear. Probably one of Jodie Whitaker's best performances. Really can't wait for next week!
It acutally really confuses me that episodes this good and episodes like Orphan 55 can occur under the same showrunner.

YES! I also really enjoyed tonights episode. It made me jump in places, and I agree, Whitaker was great. Two thumbs from me!

I might be biased because I studied Mary Shelly & Frankenstein in college, but I LOVED this episode. The Lone Cyberman was another great portrayal and in my opinion, the cruelest Cybermen since the ones in Earthshock. Now comes the 2-Part Season Finale. Wonder if Ryan, Graham, & Yaz will make it to a Third Season or if one of them ends up Cyber-Converted before Christmas. We’ll see what happens.
But another amazing episode.

At last! A truly great, flawless, perfectly-paced, dynamic and inventive episode!
Easily the best 13th Doctor episode ever, hands down... everything which is usually wrong (or "not quite right") in this new incarnation was masterfully handled here - the Doctor had more gravitas when needed, the group dynamics were tenser, the plot was really well thought-out! Outstanding!

Well I don't play Mortal Kombat and I think I'm perfectly entitled to use the adjectives I want when reacting to an episode, thank you very much. Anyway, back to the episode. I was really, really worried about this one - especially since I consider Ken Russell's Gothic to be a masterpiece (ah, I've done it again!). This set the bar quite high IMHO - and this episode really succeeded in capturing the same atmosphere but with a really clever Whovian twist on the whole thing. And I thought the historical characters were really well rendered, avoiding the pitfalls of caricature; I especially liked the treatment of Polidori, far closer to the historical character than the snarky buffoon (brilliantly) played by Timothy Spall in Gothic. The whole episode, of course, reminded me of my own take on these events, in our Lady Penelope's Odyssey campaign, back in 2011... dwaitas.blogspot.com/2011/04/campaign-notes-our-second-season-last.htmlIt had no Cybermen in it - but psychic vampires and connection to the "Carcosa / King in Yellow" mythos... and Byron rather than Shelley in the pivotal role. In fact, I threw in a MK reference in the last session I played with my friend. All I was trying to say in regards to that was not everything is perfect because not everybody shares a single opinion. I have yet to see Ken Russell's Gothic, but it sounds interesting from what you said. It's funny you should mention having your own Pseudo-Historical Adventure involving psychic vampires because I have something similar planned for this arc in my own campaign which involves another historical author. As for the rest of it, well... that would be telling.  Also, I have a theory about the finale and about the new Sacha Dhawan Master. But again, I'll save it until the episode actually airs so I can see how close I was. |

Honestly the episode was kind of spoiled for me by being part of this season. By itself it was good, good pacing, good atmosphere, good plot but it sets up a great plot hook for whats coming and that just suffers so much in this season. We've had so many ideas and concepts in this season that just seem to either go nowhere or should have a season to themself.
Gallfirey's fate, the timeless child, the villains last episode, Ruth and now they're off to deal with the resolution of this episode. Maybe they're going to bring it all together but right now it just feels like a bunch of random ideas rather than a proper season arc and its suffering for it. We've got only two episodes left in the season and from the looks of it the timeless child will be revealed and resolved in episode 10 or 9/10 and its I fear going to be rushed again.
I think they'd have done better with removing a few of the episodes they had and drawing out some of the plots more rather than the mystery/reveal happening with seconds of each other over and over interspersed with public service announcements.

This was certainly one of the better episodes of the series. The house was a fantastic idea, the historical figures interesting (though I'm still in two minds about whether it's a good idea to have so many). Slightly let down by the lone cyberman but we'll see how that links into next week. The whole thing had an excellent gothic horror vibe throughout. More like this, less of the public service announcements/dramabot 3000 writing. |

We're as I said 2 episodes from the end and all we even know about the timless child is that we've been told "Its fundamental to timelord society" and "its a lie" . . . could you perhaps, show us how its such a fundamental thing before you reveal and resolve it presumably in the next episode or two? I know everyone wants to make their mark and you can't just keep rehashing the same stories. But if you're going to insert a massive fundamental lore shift like this to a show with 60 years of history you can't just go "X is fundamental now onto the plot" without angering and/or confusing your audience. It's your show at hte moment but its a shared universe and people have established concepts. We know a lot about timelord society at this stage and we've never heard about your special new snowflake. So show us how it ties in, what it means don't just toss in a throwaway line then ignore it for the majority of your seasons run. A new show or one you've created you can introduce elements as you go, an existing show if you want to change something you have to SHOW it. You have to demonstrate how it fits in with the established lore or if it contradicts it justify why.
Its not just the timeless child either as I said at this stage in the "modern" world you can't just go "There is no unit and no one believes in aliens." because it doesn't work. We've had giant spaceships broadcast live on international tv crashing, buzzing and shooting people. You can't stuff that genie back into the bottle anymore. If you want the "Doctor is the only line of defense storyline" you need to either show us a believable explanation of how we went from worldwide belief in aliens (to the point a capital city was evacuated on expectation of an ALIEN something as its been happening every christmas) and a powerful UNIT to a disbanded unit and disbelief. Alternatively don't set episodes in the modern day go back to the 50's-70's when you could still justify that kind of storyline as UNIT's finding their feat and there's been no televised alien incdients.
Then there's things like the "Its an alternate timeline Graham earth may not end up like this." when you don't need too. We know earth was abandoned as it burned (Amy and the space whale), we know humanity came back (Rose and Satellite 5). Just have this inbetween, save a few character and reassure him with "Yes Graham it burned but it wasn't the end humanity escape entire countries fleeing into space then they come back. This resort is the begining of humanities return to earth. Kane terraforms it for her daughter and within Apple years its become the capital of the 1st great and bountiful human empire. You humans no matter how far you go or how much you change in the end you always come home to earth."

It was a good episode but I didn't like the bait and switch half way. The episode started off as a cool historical ghost story and while you know it won't be ghosts because they aren't real (or are they?) which had me on the edge of my seat. The sudden twist where it's the lone cyberman... I don't know... it just sit well with me. I was looking forward to a nice horror story and didn't get it. I did enjoy the episode. I guess I wanted something else.
Also, does anyone else think there are too many plot threads left hanging this season? Are they all going to be tied up by the end or what?

Oh definately as I've said here and elsewhere this season seems to have a mix of plot's left hanging and "Look its a plot hook, look its a resolution" and winds up feeling rushed in the episode itself as well as a season. They'd do a lot better to have these ideas explored more. The big overarching plot for example is the timeless child we were told two things about it in episode 1 and it looks like it'll be resolved either in episode 10 or 9/10. Which means its going to be rushed or left hanging. |

The Timeless Child was actually first mentioned last season in Jodie Whitaker's second episode, so it's been in the background longer than a lot of people realise. |
