BACKGROUND
Born in 1899, in Chicago. He grew up as Isaac Purlmutter, in the Maxwell Street area of the Windy City. He learned to play the drums in his late teens. Joe never went to high school. In 1918, when the Great War broke out, Joe enlisted immediately. He was anxious to see the world, and was hungry for adventure. And he found plenty of it in the military theater of the time. During the war he made two very reliable friends. His military commander, General Pershing; and the man he fought alongside in France, Nicholas Turner. After the armistice, Joe and Nick returned to the states, via New York harbor. And they later moved back to Joe's old stomping grounds in Chicago.
Both working as musicians (Joe had picked up the clarinet), they migrated to New Orleans, where Isaac Purlmutter adopted the name "Joe Woodburn".
By the late 1920s, Joe was working in the House Band in a well-known nightclub in north Texas. And this is where he met a Harlem prostitute turned teacher, Molly Fulcrum. Soon after, the two embarked on a Lavender Marriage, for the sake of both of their careers. Molly had a rather unconventional lifestyle, and Joe was a gay man.
In 1929, they both witnessed a man gode a teenaged boy into attacking a man who later died. And this was the beginning of their problems with the aliens known as the Ot'urt, and their leader; Thanezush, the last of his kind.
For the next 38 years, until his own death from a heart attack, Joe helped Molly, as well as agents of Longbow, and later UNIT in their efforts to thwart the plans of Thanezush and the Ot'urt. These aliens used orphaned children not only as slaves, but also as a form of nourishment. Thanezush had a distillation machine that reduce a human to the bare minerals that made up the body, so that they could be readily ingested by Thanezush.
Thanezush died due to the actions of the Timelord, Aberlard Gan. But his lieutenant got his revenge by ending Molly Fulcrum's life in 1953.
After Joe died, and Molly's lover, Helen Neely became a recluse; Gan and another rogue Timelord succeeded in forcing the Ot'urt off Earth with the help of the Zuecid Anti-Aggression Taskforce from the Andromeda galaxy.
PERSONALITY
Joe is actually a very gentle man. A real gentleman, in the trou definition of the term. But, he can handle himself when fisticuffs break out. A gay man; but, living in Texas in the Great Depression, this is not something he tells others very readily. He will defend Molly Fulcrum, her lover, or her family unswervingly. And even when he re-enlisted in the Army during WWII; he did his best to check up on her. He had a few friends that owed him favors, who would take Joe's place protecting Molly during the War years. Joe has a heroic mentality. He was an adventurous man to the end of his days. And he was already with a smile, or a joke to brighten the mood.
PERSONAL GOAL
To be a "top notch" Jazz musician. To help Molly Fulcrum in her fight against the Ot'urt, and Thanezush. To help Longbow and later UNIT, as well as the Zuecid Anti-Aggression Taskforce in this effort.
