Hi, everyone! So if you haven't seen it, I posted a list of upcoming adventures for my Adventures of Kanya RPG. One of the future adventures will feature the return of Eddie Gregory who as revealed in the last adventure to feature him, was actually a student studying under River Song sometime between meeting the Twelfth Doctor for the first (and last) time, and her meeting with the Tenth Doctor in the Library. As I revealed in my summarization of the playthrough, River was recruiting who she felt were some of the best students to inherit her legacy. This is meant as a way to fill the gap between the time we saw Eddie last and where we'll see him in The Dig of Death Adventure which I adapted from Diary of the Doctor Who RPG Game. This is just a little fanfic that can be viewed almost like a 'Minisode' of sorts similar to Pond Life and P.S. Hope you enjoy.
Eddie Gregory knew something had been wrong when he was met with men in suits outside his dorm room.
It was nearly a week before graduation from Luna University when it happened. It had also been one year since he had gone on an expedition where he ran into a Time Lady (A TIME LADY!) during a 'training course' his professor had put him up for. He wasn't so sure of it himself. He had been nothing more than a street-thug dealing with the worst of what life would deal one. He remembered the day he met her trying to nick some money from her purse while her back was turned. She'd caught him, but instead of arresting him, she simply offered him a drink on her.
Professor Song had outlined her dilemma. She was a time traveler who'd fought monsters, righted wrongs, and was atoning for a crime she could not prevent. Unfortunately, she'd heard rumors of her impending death and was looking for someone to pass the legacy onto once she did die. Although she'd known Eddie was right behind her, she still saw potential in his method to survival and offered him a full-on scholarship with 'extra credit assignments' from her at Luna University.
Eddie had a couple rough weeks then. The people often made fun of his poor background, and the assignments were not always that glamorous. Eddie didn't know what he was even studying for.
Then the incident came in that the colony/leisure planet of Romini had somehow gone completely dark. Professor Song had sent Eddie and another team of potential recruits out to deal with the matter. What they found was that the entire colony had been infected with an interdimensional virus so powerful that a couple of Daleks who'd crash-landed had also become zombified with the desire for flesh and adding to their ranks. Despite the hopelessness of the situation and the little knowledge he had about the undead after getting to the planet, he made it out alive with the help of the mysterious Time Lady known as Kanya (and her companion Lee,) and Eddie had even outwitted Davros, the dreaded creator of the Daleks himself, by destroying the three Daleks that were on the planet before releasing the cure which healed everyone. When Professor Song had rescued him, he told her how on the planet he did everything not just for his own life, but because he had discover that the being that brought this virus here was intent on assimilating as many recruits and as much information as she could. It would not end with the planet, and he knew that with the Daleks here, it couldn't end until he dealt with them also. Which is why he blew up two Daleks, and sliced the other one open with the destroyed Dalek gun before checking that no other Dalek lifeforms were present and then getting to safety. More importantly, when he was making the cure, he realized that the undead were still colonists, and families, and people with lives who were depending on him to have something close to humanity restored (even if he couldn't undo the physical changes, the courses he took at Luna University helped him develop a cure to remove the aggressive tendencies, and return the victims to full sanity.)
Eddie Greggory had learned to put others first so that they could have the chance at the life he was living; make a change and do what they could to help those in need.
With that, he'd quickly excelled in the classes with enough hard work and dedication. Professor Song had helped a bit in studying, but soon her visits became less frequent. Despite her absence, Eddie pushed on and had earned his doctorate in archeology with a minor in history which he'd receive upon his graduation day.
Unfortunately, the celebration would have to wait. As today he was visited by the men in suits. They introduced themselves as representatives of the Lux family who'd been given specific instructions to deliever a final letter for Eddie along with a package. Eddie once again felt fear for the first time since he faced the undead as he saw the letter addressed to him was in Professor Song's handwriting. He opened the envelope and read to confirm his fears.
Professor Song had written one last message to him. She had a feeling that the Lux Family assignment would be her death, and thus was her way of wishing him the best at life. She told him not to grieve as she'd made peace with herself. Instead, she asked to take everything she'd taught him into consideration as he moved forward. She asked him not to use her death as an excuse to wallow in self-pity, but honor her by living every day as a gift while adventuring in time and space to help others. She left him with the keys to all of time and space and what he did next was his choice as long as it was fun and a little bit dangerous. In the package, she enclosed some gifts to him to help get Eddie started; a sonic trowel, a vortex manipulator (donated by a Jack Harkness on "one of his many deaths" whatever that meant,) a guide for making Mnemosine recall-wipe vapour, and a journal of his very own to document his own adventures in. Her letter concluded by wishing him a happy graduation day and a final request to take care of the Vortex Manipulator or she'd come back to haunt him.
A week later, Eddie Gregory graduated from Luna University, a changed man in more ways than one. Ready to live life one adventure through time and space after another.
After securing his own place to stay, and listing availability for the biggest jobs anywhere and anywhen to those who needed his assistance for the right cause, he was contacted for a mission to study on the Moon of Karpos.
Little did he know he'd be in for quite a few surprises when he got there.
