Origins
As the players are travelling to a destination for relaxation their time travel device shudders, cracks and tumbles through a weird glowing whirlpool in the time vortex. Groggily pulling themselves together they find their readings all showing wild swings and impossible readings. An inspection outside reveals that they are not where they intend to be. In fact any time traveller's or people with high knowledge can determine that this . . . this is not their universe. As they explore they find their device is lacking power and they need to find something not only powerful enough to recharge their vessel (or jump start it) but also to breach the dimensional barriers and return home. However it fails and they find themselves in another incorrect dimension.
The good.
PC's with a high cultural awareness will begin to realize that this isn't just any old random dimension but something that they have stories and records about at home. Startrek, starwars, shadowrun, stargate, buffy the vampire slayer, the legendary adventures of hercules. Universe after universe that is a story or fiction (Use your own players favorite series) where they get caught up in events there yet somehow can't get home. What has brought them to a realm of stories and imagination? Of course how often do you get a chance to walk up to a jerk from a movie and punch them in the face?
The Bad
Slowly it begins to dawn on the PC's that they aren't just failing to get home. Rather each universe, each challenge facing the inhabitants of the universe they wind up in reveals some new element of their own vessel. Power sources, operating principles, components, hazards, defenses.
The Revelation
They crashed after falling out of the time vortex but not into another dimension rather onto another planet where the inhabitants were developed enough to realize what they had but not reverse engineer it. So they hooked the prisoners up to a VR system that draws on their own knowledge and memories to create scenarios which will teach them how to build their own time vessel.
The escape
Fortunately since it was designed to work on an alien species the system has a flaw. It draws on their own minds to create the scenario they can disable it by focusing on the next attempt to return home causing the VR system to shut down and release them. Of course then they have to actuallly escape, retrieve or destroy all data that has been compiled by their adventures and recover a vessel that isn't necessarily in the best condition when they find it.
