I thought I would have a go at creating one of those archetypal maverick cops, the kind that sails close to the wind to get a result, will say and do what more career-minded officers can't or won't, and gets them to go along with him anyway by being annoyingly brilliant. He probably has a vintage car of some description as well.

"John Actor is Inspector Monkfish, the tough, uncompromising cop! He shouts and points and tells women to go and make him a cup of tea! Coming soon to the BBC in a brand new drama series from the makers of Monkfish M.D."

And with a few different tweaks (for example, making the Eccentric a Major trait or adding an Obsession), you get an unconventional-but-not-as-tough (but still uncompromising) detective, as seen in such shows as Monk, Sherlock, Broadchurch and The Bridge.

I love the idea of creating more base archtypes to start players with. It reminds me a lot of the Star Wars D6 Templates.

Yes, it's actually right there in the main rulebook - they have Scientist, UNIT soldier and a couple of other ones that I think are a bit daft: Indiana Jones, for instance, or the homeless street thief turned global rock star. In a campaign with the Doctor as a PC I don't think companion PCs should usually be all that outlandish - these days they're usually pretty ordinary people who haven't had anything really extraordinary happen to them yet. The more unusual ones tend not to have ended up travelling in the TARDIS out of choice or may not have a lot to go back home for. I might play that detective character in some kind of Torchwood or UNIT-style game, though.

One of the early AITAS games I played in was inspired by The Mentalist had The Norn joined by a Teresa Lisbon analogue. You could easily drop a Who group into a cop show and have a character join the group; a good way fro a new player with a character in mind to join.

I don't go in for cross-overs really, but if I did I think the show would have to be Dixon of Dock Green.
