Yesterday I watched the 5th Doctor episode MAWDRYN UNDEAD. In the bonus features there are some disparaging remarks - even from Peter Davison himself - about the episode TIME FLIGHT.
TIME FLIGHT is not yet part of my collection, but from the episode's entry in the 5th Doctor sourcebook it is high on my to-purchase list.
So, if TIME FLIGHT really is so bad, why? What do you think about the episode?

It's one of my least favourite stories. It's dull. It suffers from end of series budget problems. The Plamatons are naff. It's dull. There's absolutely no reason for the Kalid disguise. Oh, did I mention that it's dull?

And as misterharry said, it's dull. The worst of the Davison era.

Okay, that doesn't sound, ahem, good.
The episode is possibly losing ground on my to-purchase list ...

If you don't mind spoilers you could try the Wife in Space review of the ep.In the old DWM poll it came 196th out of 200, above such jewels as Underworld, Time and the Rani, Timelash and The Twin Dilemma.

This had been widely discussed and debated elsewhere but sadly for me, John Nathan-Turner’s tenure as show runner was perhaps the lowest point in the show’s history. I don’t mean to be unkind and undermine the genuinely talented artists of this period, but his production and design style relegated the show’s drama to a mere light-entertainment pantomime and turned characters into caricatures of themselves. In my opinion, many of the stories from this period are actually better as RPG campaigns, than as original viewing. Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings, etc.) for one, cites the Seventh Doctor as one of his favourites, which lends credence to the possibility that perhaps this negative perception of the show in that period was only shared by those who knew the show in earlier times. Or maybe it was just a flavour of direction and drama that didn't resonate with me.

Thank you for the link to the Wife in Space - with the Flight of the Darned youtube-video. Awesome! I laughed my arse off.

I hasten to add: the 4th and 5th Doctors are exempt. I admit I’m a hardcore Pertwee/Baker fan and the 6th and 7th Doctors didn’t have the same impact on me as 3rd and 4th Doctors did. Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy are fine actors. Nothing wrong with them. It's entirely about the production and direction of the show at that time. By the time I saw what Colin Baker had to wear, I’d had it with Nathan-Turner. Further revelations about his time on the show have reinforced my opinion. However, if not for him, it wouldn’t have gone off air and we wouldn’t have the new series, so, c’est la vie.

Ah, I see, we are not that far from one another! Especially about being hard-core fans of John Pertwee and Tom Baker. Tom Baker is my favorite doctor ever, and when I saw him again as museum curator in the 50 years special, I nearly clapped my hands for joy like some school child. Would have been embarrassing, as I'am quite an old geezer.
Concerning the Seventh Doctor, I have only seen a handful of episodes, but I liked them all, and, please forgive me, even TIME AND THE RANI. Why? Don't know, perhaps it was simply the fine interaction between Kate O'Mara and Sylvester McCoy. DELTA AND THE BANNERMEN is light-hearted entertainment, which I loved, and GHOST LIGHT and BATTLEFIELD are particular favorites of mine. And, I have to admit, I like Ace very much. Often the dialogues between her and the doctor are divine.

(there is a Sapphire and Steel in the works I'm excited about)

Mind you, as Sylvester McCoy was playing Radagast in Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy, Jackson might have had other reasons for saying this.
