My AITAS campaign is somewhat detached from ins source of inspiration, which is of course Doctor Who.
During the Dark Times one of the Great Old Ones created a doomsday gadget called the "Genesis Arch", with which he/she/it wanted to change basic parameters of the Universe, probably with the main objective of writing the Time Lords out of it.
The Time Lords, however, managed to take the Genesis Arch away from its creator. They researched the gadget and did something very foolish - they decided not to dismantle this device of their possible doom, but to keep it for some point in time where it might prove useful in some plot of their own. For security, they locked the Genesis Arch away in the Void, only recoverable by some sort of key they manufactured and called the Morphonion.
Aeons later, during some internal conflict of Time Lord factions, the Morphonion was stolen and dismantled into seven fragments, scattered around the universe in disguised forms.
In addition, two of the fragments were expanded to become doomsday machines of their own, albeit on a somewhat smaller scale than the Genesis Arch.
Again some time later, in Mutter's Spiral a humanoid empire flourished and then, 20.000 years ago, fell during a huge war against a rival species. Both species, the humanoid Toreans and their insectoid enemies, perished from their own doomsday weapons, creating a sphere of devastated worlds in our Galaxy, some 30.000 light years from Earth.
The Toreans left a huge spaceship that was programmed to search for the Morphonion and that later drifted through a wormhole ending above the Earth's south pole, where UNIT got hold of it in the early 21st century.
Then something happened, around 2012 Earth time. All Time Lord Tardises (there was no Time War in our campaign, which tends more towards the old series for inspiration) sounded their Cloister Bells, and the Torean spaceship activated, taking away its UNIT research team on an intergalactic cruise in search of the Morphonion.
Our player characters were kidnapped by another automated Torean space vessel und later stumbled on board the UNIT SS DESTINY (you'll recognise the source of that!). Meanwhile, the UNIT team on board DESTINY and the adventurers have found five of the seven pieces of the Morphonion, but lost one of them to the "Force of Ur" (a six galaxies power conglomerate) and one to a roving Time Lady, Professor Gran. Several of her incarnations later, she had to hide from a rival faction and used her Chameleon arc to vanish into Earth's history, where the adventurers found her, transported by her TARDIS via a preprogrammed course.
Currently, the adventurers are en route with Professor Gran on her TARDIS, but they do not have the foggiest idea of Gran's motivation.
