there is also a pretty good argument that Smith is still the 11th doctor. He's just the 12th incarnation. Hurt exists between McGann and Eccleston and doesnt get to be the Doctor because of what he did. much like smith saying he couldnt be the Doctor anymore if he lobotomized the star whale That's really the only way it can work, if he is the Time War Doctor. I hearby dub him "Storm". Or "The Storm" if you prefer.

A little bit too metaphysical though ,surely. It is a bit like an angry parent telling his child " You are no son of mine" and that being misinterpreted as the literal truth.

Almost a perfect episode. I like that they brought back the G.I. and it makes sense in the context of the episode that it would the ability of harassing The Doctor throughout time and space with such fervor. Just didn't like how they got there. But oh, splicing in clips of the other Doctors. [glow=red,2,300] Genius, sheer genius.[/glow] On the whole what regeneration Mr. Hurt is, well, it was a RTD throwaway line when the Doctor told Sarah Jane "half a dozen times since I last saw you" Or was it

On the whole what regeneration Mr. Hurt is, well, it was a RTD throwaway line when the Doctor told Sarah Jane "half a dozen times since I last saw you" True. And the Doctor might have been deliberately leaving out the black-sheep ninth incarnation.

One thing I am disappointed with is that I was hoping this ‘Greatest Secret’ build-up was something from the Doctor’s beginnings, not something fairly recent. In this sense, I feel it was a bit of a con.
On the other hand, I know this will please many purists who didn't want anything too radical and mythos-changing.

And the Doctor might have been deliberately leaving out the black-sheep ninth incarnation. The last time the Doctor met Sarah Jane in the classic run was during the Five Doctors, so 'half a dozen times' would include the one played by John Hurt.

And that included the regenerations that have not yet been. or even ones that existed in alternative Timelines where he became someone else

In my mind I count John Hurt as "Doctor" 8.5
That assumption will be kept until such time as some other order is proven.
Nice intro, though.
