I am a huge fan of Classic Doctor Who even though I'm rather young. When Doctor Who first came out in America, I educated myself on classic Who by watching every episode I could get my hands on (and by living in the age of information, that was almost all of them). Now, I want to start using Classic Doctor's for my games, but my players are practically all new to Doctor Who.
I had tried to show one of them some of the Older episodes, but he flat out refused to watch the first and second doctors (due to the fact that they are in black and white). I even showed him one of Tom Baker's best episodes (the Deadly Assassin) and even then he disliked it.
My question is this. How can I educate ALL of my players enough to be able to play with an older Doctor without showing them the episodes? Some of them might like the old series, some may not. When I play this game, I make sure that all of my players at least have a general knowledge of the doctor we are playing with, that way they feel more comfortable with the game. I'm just afraid that I'll never be able to play with a classic Doctor. America is rather short on Whovians, especially those who have seen the Classic episodes.

Interesting question.
Incorporating DW canon can be tricky.
I'm playing in a game right now and the first adventure featured the Rani, the Movellans, and Drax. I knew who they were, but felt it was too many canon elements too soon and in too few episodes. Now, I'm a big DW fan. I've got ALL the DVDs. I have a stunning collection of sonic screwdrivers. I have an 18 foot scarf and Ten's coat. and, I thought it was too much. The other players didn't know these NPCs and didn't care. They felt overwhelmed and frustrated.
To better develop an answer for you, let me ask you a side question: Wwhy do you want to include a classic Doctor? What are you hoping to accomplish?

My hope is to not only encourage my players to learn about Classic Doctors, but to be able to find a Doctor that one of my players can play easily. I have had games where the personality of tenth Doctor was a little much for a few of my players. They found it hard to stay true to the character, partly because he's rather erratic, partly because it clashed with their own personality. I might switch to having the Doctor become an NPC that I control, but eventually I want to have all of my players have a Doctor that they feel comfortable playing. And if I can get them to that point the game will run smoother, plus we might even be able to do a game where everyone is the Doctor (A Five Doctors kind of thing).

I play with players who know next to nothing about Doctor Who, however they manage to play fairly well with commonly occurring Doctor Who characters. I think you have the right idea with making the Doctor an NPC. It will help take the pressure off of playing a character that's not their own. How I teach my players about Doctor Who history is to have their characters live it. I don't recreate the original episodes so much as their themes and history. I really try to have the history be a big part in the stories. Maybe the Daleks are still peeved about the events of "Genesis of the Daleks" and want revenge, or maybe the characters are on Earth during the events of "The Tenth Planet" and have to defend themselves from 1st gen Cybermen and witness the destruction of Mondas. Or maybe they even help the Fourth Doctor regenerate by guiding the Watcher to his broken body. Anyway just my two cents. Do with them what you will.

You can lead a horse to water, but...
If people aren't interested in the classic (or new) series, forcing it on them isn't going to help, and may damage their interest in the game as well as the show. I'd shrug it off, and mine the stories they don't want to watch for ideas.
