"Torchwood: outside the government, beyond the United Nations. Tracking down alien life on Earth, arming the human race against the future. The twenty-first century is when everything changes, and Torchwood is ready."
This is a saga of 3 episodes that I started. We played episode one yesterday and I am happy to repost the first episode here. If there is demand I will also post the second and third episodes also.
Some background information
The Torchwood Institute (usually referred to simply as Torchwood) is a secret organisation from Britain. Established by Queen Victoria in 1879, its prime purpose is to defend Britain against extraterrestrial threats, namely, the threats associated with visits from The Doctor.
The Torchwood Institute began, however, to use their findings to restore the British Empire to its former glory. To those ends, the organisation acquires and reverse engineers alien technology by any means deemed necessary.
Established in 1882 the fourth branch of Torchwood was a covert British organization, in the United States, it was initially given the purpose of securing alien technology in the western hemisphere to 1) help defend the British Empire and 2) help re-secure the colonies for the British Empire.
Torchwood 4 lost all contact with the other branches round about 1901 when the chapter moved from Virginia to Indianapolis. The move was because a time space disturbance was discovered in Indianapolis. An underground base was built around this disturbance to house the secret organization's new headquarters. The construction went unnoticed due to being covered up as the construction of a Soldiers and Sailors' monument. The purpose and goals of the organization today are entirely up to the players, but should be roughly the same as the opening paragraph.
The Torchwood Staff usually consists of;
A Commander
A Security Officer or Police Liason
A Medical Officer
A Technology / Computer Specialist
An Alien Technology / Weapons Specialist
An Office Manager / Resource Specialist
Have the players pick from these roles for character creation or make up a Torchwood role of their own.
The player who picked Technology / Computer Specialist in my campaign could not make it when we played episode 1. His role was easily doubled by the Alien Technology / Weapons Specialist, if there is a player who isn’t sure if they can make all three nights steer them to one of these two roles. A definite bonus is that if someone shows up to play and didn’t create their character ahead of time there is a Torchwood Operative pre gen.
We decided that the A Security Officer or Police Liaison would be new to the organization having just been drafted in from another alien hunter organization called the initiative (Stolen from Buffy), although he had worked with Torchwood before. Having this newcomer makes introducing the base and characters more easily role played.
The Alien Technology / Weapons Specialist took the Sickly trait and I decided to have some fun with it.
The Campaign will develop in three episodes
1. The Genesis Egg
2. Power Struggle
3. Rebirth and The Chase Backwards (A double episode treat!)
EPISODE 1.
1. Josephs Gone.
In order to set the mood I started with an NPC character already being dead. He was killed very recently as the team fought off an ice warrior invasion. I told the players how close they were to “Joseph” and described how he died in a painful messy death at the hands of the invading Ice Warriors. This definitely helped set a darker Torchwood like angst for the game.
I took the Idea of having a pre written script for the prologue from the Game Masters guide and we all read it together. It worked a lot better than I thought it would to set the mood of the campaign and got the characters role playing off of each other right away. So here it is:
The torchwood physician stood alone in the torchwood morgue and looked down at the body bag on the slab. There wasn’t a corpse inside, just some dust and goop and a few of Joseph’s personal belongings. The Physician wasn’t good with words, they were troublesome things at the best of times for him. He never knew what to say in these situations after a while he just says
A Medical Officer : Goodbye Joseph
And rolls the drawer shut. The door to the cabinet shut and the physician hung the ID on the door and walked back into the central room. All eyes were on him making him feel even more uncomfortable than usual.
A Medical Officer : It’s done.
An Alien Technology / Weapons Specialist: (sniffle achoo) I don’t know how we will get by without him.
An Office Manager / Resource Specialist: We will get by cause that is what he would have … wanted … us to do.
A Medical Officer: (uncomfortable changes the subject) Where’s Heidi gone?
An Alien Technology / Weapons Specialist: (Cough Wheeze) Where else? Gone to fetch the replacement.
An Office Manager / Resource Specialist: Already? Doesn’t she have any regard for our feelings? (More to herself than out loud) This just won’t be good for Morale.
A Medical Officer: A new person?!? They won’t like me! It’ll be horrible. (Attempts to hide in a nearby sofa)
An Alien Technology / Weapons Specialist: (choke gasp) She doesn’t seem to think about things like that. She is just all business. What do any of us really know about her? Yet we all follow her and what is with that name?!? (chucks an empty inhaler at her nameplate)
An Office Manager / Resource Specialist: Lets all calm down a little. We know Heidi (The Commander) is a bit out there, but she has our interests at heart. Dear, get out of the sofa, you’ll be just fine.
A Medical Officer: No, I won’t everyone … Hates … ME!
An Office Manager / Resource Specialist looks at An Alien Technology / Weapons Specialist for help.
An Alien Technology / Weapons Specialist: (Hack Shiver) I never said I hate you … exactly
An Office Manager / Resource Specialist glares at An Alien Technology / Weapons Specialist as A Medical Officer pulls more cushions over himself.
An Office Manager / Resource Specialist: Think of Joseph. He would want us to be strong.
A Medical Officer thinks about Joseph. Joseph was always kind to him. Joseph Always made him better. A Medical Officer stands up.
An Office Manager / Resource Specialist: There’s a good soldier.
A Medical Officer : I wonder what’s taking Heidi so long.
Scene change. Secret mobile military barracks of The initiative. Jackson (A Security Officer or Police Liason) stands and Colonel Obidiah sits behind his desk.
Obidiah: I am sorry Jack but it isn’t about your service record. It’s exemplary. It’s about … well the way things are. Fact is you’ve become a commodity son.
A Security Officer or Police Liason: Great, after all my service that is how I can sum it all up. I can be traded for goods and services.
Obidiah: It’s the facts son. I remember back in WWII the soldiers thought of themselves as GI, General Issue. The front is different now but the war… It never seems to change much … UNIT called in a favor. We can’t say no, we can’t handle the conflict right now after fighting off the Ice Warriors. We need them as allies.
A Security Officer or Police Liason: But if UNIT called in the favor why aren’t I going to work for them?
Ob: Seems that they owed a favor to someone else.
A Security Officer or Police Liason : Someone else? Who? … Oh wait not … Not THEM!
A Commander Enters
A Commander: Hi Jack. Miss me?
2. Jacks Here
Now I let the characters role play out the introduction of the new character and bringing him into the torchwood base. The script really helped them get into this as I wrote the script focusing on the traits that the players had selected. As soon as the role playing started to wind down I had them hear some screaming through the outside monitors.
3. (Weevils in the Sewer)
This scene is in the game because it is a great way to introduce the players to the mechanics of the game without having to interrupt the more epic struggles later in the game answering basic questions. Let this encounter go on until all the players comfortably know how to play but don’t let the players become too injured or off track chasing the weevil caught or not he isn’t that important to the story but he can definitely add more Torchwood flavor to the game.
The Characters hear some screaming outside and the see a weevil running amuck outside killing people in the monument circle just above their heads. When they ran out I had the weevil run into a nearby sewer. Half the group must give chase while the others get to treating the wounded and erasing the memories of the victims.
Since I don’t have the Aliens and Monsters book I just used the Sycoraxic’s stats for the Weevils. I used the chase instructions right out of the book, and then they had to fight the weevil to overpower it and tie it up to bring it back again using the mechanics right from the book.
Those who were topside got to use their medicine skills to help the wounded and they had to argue with the police that they had to give the wounded “WATER” (of course laced with the forget medicine) to get the hang of social interaction.
It is import here that one of the characters catch a glimpse of a man in black walking calmly away from the scene. The players don’t know it yet, but this man in black had hypnotized the weevil and caused him to attack to cover up his arrival on the planet. Do not let them find and follow him, he will find them later.
4. The Genisis Egg introduced
The players decided to sleep off their wounds an meet up the next day. When they come in they find that a artifact is going to be displayed at the Children’s museum of Indianapolis. The Artifact is called the Genesis egg.
If you think the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is a strange setting for such a prized artifact, it’s probably because you haven’t been there. They have the finest dinosaur fossil collection this side of the Field Museum of Chicago. They also have a staff of Archeologists and Scientists that do incredible research. Further they have the one and only Dracorex Hogwartsia Skull. For game purposes I said they had the complete skeleton. But any museum will do if you want to change it.
5. The Genesis Egg is alien?
The players discover through research that the Genesis Egg has some of the primordial soup that all life on earth developed from inside of it and also, very strangely, it has a complete DNA sequence inside it. The players will probably guess (incorrectly) that the DNA strand is Alien, if not gently nudge them to that conclusion. Since this is Alien Tech, Torchwood has to get it.
6. How to get it. (It's at the Childrens' Museum Dinosphere)
The players can visit the museum while it’s open to “Case the Joint.” They will see that the Egg is guarded by ARMED Security guards. I used the Unit Soldier Pre gen for their stats. There is a map of the Museum here: www.childrensmuseum.org/generalinfo/floorplan.htm While they are there during the day allow them to see the Man in Black again, but not to follow or find him. Casually mention the full skeleton of the Dracorex Hogwartsia full skeleton among your description of the bustling museum.
7. Struggle to The Egg
At night Two of the guards roam the Dinosphere where the egg is while the other four patrol the ramps between levels.
The man in black is in fact The Master. For my game I decided that after his last encounter with The Doctor he decided to return to his true goal of conquering the universe. He wants to use the Genesis Egg to determine the exact moment of when life started on earth. He will then go back to that moment and stop it. He has calculated that since life on earth would not have existed The Doctor would never have been corrupted by human values. Therefore when he was tasked with the First Strike Mission by the CIA against the Daleks (See Genesis of the Daleks), he would have succeeded and The Daleks would never been able to fight the Time War. Galifrey would be restored and The Doctor would no longer stand in his way of universal conquest. He would then be able to easily usurp the powers of the Time Lords and be Ruler Unquestioned of the universe for all time.
I found this to be a suitably convoluted “The Master” type scheme and one that would take the players three episodes to work out completely.
The night that the players decide to grab the egg is of course the same night that The Master decides to too. The Master has hypnotized the guards. He has told them that he is the night watch commander. He also told them that anyone else they see has a child and is trying to hurt the child. They must protect the “Imaginary” children hostages at all costs. So as soon as the guards see any of the Torchwood operatives they start screaming “Release the child. Stop hurting him.” And go for their guns. Remember TALK, RUN, DO, then Fight. I set the difficulty of un hypnotizing a guard at 21.
8. Meet The Master.
If any player goes off on their own at night they will encounter the Master. Who will try to hypnotize them and send them back to the group with a fake genesis egg if needed. The master will instruct them to attack the other players if they don’t have the egg or to obtain the real egg and leave it somewhere for him to pick up later. The Master needs to get possession of the egg first for the story to progress as I have written, if he doesn’t then he will keep trying to get it until he does using the security guards as needed.
9. Struggle for the Egg. (Animated Dinosaurs? Just like Invasion of the Dinosaurs!)
The master has long since ditched his tissue compression eliminator and became tired of his laser screwdriver. He now has a time bubble gun. Once he has the Genesis Egg he uses it to create a time bubble around the Dracorex Hogwartsia which brings the skeleton to life, in all its’ flesh and bone glory, and points the Dinosaur in the direction of the group to make good his escape.
Between the Guards, The Dino and The Master himself the players have quite an evening to get through. Look at this as a sandbox. Let the players lead the story of how they are going to get through the night at the museum alive.
Dracorex Hogwartsia Stats:
Attributes: AWA 4 COO 6 ING 3 PRE 4 RES 2 STR 7
Skills: ATH 4 FIG 4 SUB 2 SUR 5
Traits: Me Dinosaur, You Food. RAWR!! (Due to his thick scaly hide the dino ONLY takes 50% damage)
I used the -Superbly Written- Master stats from this thread: dwaitas.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=characters&action=display&thread=1069
I used the Unit Soldier Pre Gens for the Security Guards.
10. We got the Egg and its Sam???
The players leave the museum without the Egg, but should feel victorious that they have simply survived. The players can return to base and Research who The Master is (after all UNIT should have a library on him.) They can find his TARDIS (or makeshift time machine if the GM feels that the master doesn’t have TARDISes hidden all over the Earth) by doing a scan for alien tech or whatever means they choose.
When they find The Master’s TARDIS they see the master leaving and getting into a cab. The Master had gone back to his TARDIS to use the Zero Room to heal up after the night at the museum. They follow and he leads them to IUPUI. If they try to catch him, he leads them on a chase there. The master heads for the physics department. The Master has Genesis Egg with him. He has the research group that controls the Carbon Dating Machine at the university under hypnosis as well. Use the scientist/inventor pre gen for those minions if The Master chooses to send them after the players.
When the players catch up with The Master he has just found the needed date and he finds the players in Borg Like fashion to not be a threat. He soliloquizes a bit of his plan. He tells the players that their entire race will soon not exist and that The Doctor will complete his mission from the Time Lords successfully this time.
He then activates a watch teleport device and disappears in front of the players. His laugh and smiling beard remaining for a few seconds longer than the rest of him like the Cheshire cat. The Master has returned to his TARDIS and departs for the past.
The players can again return to their Base and research. What they find out is what the bridge to the Next episode. They find that The Genesis Egg has indeed revealed the exact time of creation on life to The Master. They find out that they can question Sara Jane Smith about what The Doctor’s Mission was. Finally they find that the Genesis Eggs DNA sequence is already in the Torchwood database. It is one of the player characters’ DNA sequence which has been encoded for millions of years in the Genesis Egg. This revelation should be an optimal cliffhanger for the evening.
I hope you find this adventure useful and fun. We had a fantastic time playing it due to the well written game engine and the wealth of ready to play options available in the game.
This is a saga of 3 episodes that I started. We played episode one yesterday and I am happy to repost the first episode here. If there is demand I will also post the second and third episodes also.
