I'm going to be running a face-to-face game this weekend, and although I've got the first adventure mapped out, I've been trying to come up with a story arc...and I think I finally did.
"City of Death" is my all-time favorite Old Who story, and I've always wondered...what did the remaining eleven scattered Scaroths do after the events of that story? He/They would make a great overarching villain, is what I think...
First, I placed the other 11 Scaroths in time:
Northern Europe, approx. 10,000 BC (Neanderthal times)
Egypt, 2440 BC (Egyptian Fifth Dynasty)
Babylon, 1770 BC (Time of Hammurabi)
Crete, 1650 BC (Destruction of Atlantis)
Troy, 1200 BC (Trojan War)
Rome, 72 AD (Time of Emperor Vespasian)
Peru, 520 AD (Nazca Lines)
Easter Island, 1370 BC (Construction of Easter Island Statues)
Florence, 1505 AD (Italian Renaissance)
Newcastle, 1820 AD (Introduction of railroads)
Edo, 1861 AD (Meiji Restoration)
Paris, 1979 AD (events of “City of Death”)
Now, after "City of Death", this is what (in my campaign) happened to them:
The remaining 11 Scaroths began to debate their next move among themselves, and their unity was lost.
The two eldest Scaroths (Neanderthal and Egyptian), seeing no hope, and no way to help their fellows in any case, packed it in and chose to live out the remainder of their lives in as much comfort as they could manage.
The Peruvian Scaroth set about taking control of the local population and instigated the construction of the Nazca lines, hoping to attract the attention of passing extraterrestrials who might rescue him from Earth; this did not work, and he finally lost hope and died.
The Easter Island Scaroth went mad, and forced the local population to construct the giant stone heads. He lives still, in a cave on the island, hidden away and entirely insane.
The Florence, Newcastle and Edo Scaroths continue to work together on a revised version of the original plan. As yet, it shows no chance of working. The Newcastle Scaroth observed the events of “The Mark of the Rani” but steered clear of the Doctor, the Rani and the Master.
The Roman Scaroth continues to try and advance the technology of Rome. He has high hopes for the steam engine and a Roman-era Industrial Revolution.
The Cretan Scaroth discovered a massive Silurian base underneath Crete, with a fully intact Silurian Combat Ark filled with a hundred thousand frozen Sea Devil soldiers, a thousand fearsome Myrka monsters, and a hundred heavily armed combat craft. The Babylonian Scaroth, learning of this, dropped out of contact with his selves and bided his time, lying in wait until his Cretan self discovered the Ark and then attacking him, imprisoning the Cretan in a Silurian Hibernation Module, taking control of the Combat Ark, and launching it into space (incidentally causing the destruction of Atlantis).
And finally, the Trojan Scaroth found evidence of alien (Osirian, it turned out) artifacts buried beneath Troy. Unfortunately, the coming destruction of Troy by the Greeks would put an end to his exploration, so he intervened, proclaiming himself to be Scarlax, God of Vengeance, and personally leading the defense of Troy. At the same time, he’s managed to unearth an Osirian Time Projector and is trying to get it to work.
One of my planers has come up with a character from Ancient Greece, so I placed one of the Scaroths there. I've got the opening scene of that adventure clear in my mind: the TARDIS arrives outside the gates of Troy, and the PCs emerge to see a massive wooden horse engulfed in flame, while a screaming, green-tentacled creature commands the Trojan archers to rain burning arrows down upon it. Really, it writes itself!
Any thoughts?
