Hi everyone. I don't know if I necessarily qualify as a "new player" but this question seems at home here. I've been running a Doctor Who campaign over the last few months with some players from this board. It's been online with Discord for voice and chat and Roll20 for the actual "game". The first two adventures have been things I've written but I'm getting ready to try some published C7 adventures as we move onward, mostly from All of Time and Space Volume 1.
How do folks run their online games? I honestly don't think Roll20 is really that necessary and it's a real resource hog for older computers. I'm considering just using theater of the mind and switching totally to Discord. (I have a dicebot in the chat on my server that works well enough.) I mostly play D&D 5e in my other games where a battle grid is necessary and thus Roll20 but it does not seem appropriate to Doctor Who.

I'd add that I used some maps off Reddit for the first few sessions and they were kinda neat but hardly necessary. Probably more work than is worth it.

I play Kitten, a lady cat burglar, in those sessions and I enjoy them. Since I don't know how to use the dicebot, I roll real dice. I have 6 clear D6 from my Dr. Who RPG box set, 2 black D6 with skulls instead of the number 1, and a set of red dice with white numbers that run from a D3 to a D100.
