Is that the first time 'arse' has been uttered on the show?

Clara's death last week was really sad, but watching The Doctor all on his own for 40 minutes having to deal with it was just devastating. Absolute masterpiece of an episode!

Wow. And wow again. Great chunks of Who mythology being written here. And it's great. Can't wait for next week.

It was good before the Doctor figured out what was going on. The resolution was silly.

I suspect the line about him being the hybrid may have been an example of Rule One, but we'll find out either way next time, possibly.

I suspect the line about him being the hybrid may have been an example of Rule One Rule One: Moffat lies so he can contradict himself later and act like it was a clever move.

It's just a matter of time until the statements made in the 8th Doctor TV film are validated. Better sooner than later.

On the other hand there are a few options taken from on screen that could offer alternatives...I remember my in the first complete Who story there was this wonderful gem... "And didn't we have trouble with the prototype." "'We'?" "They." The Brain of Morbius story had the appearance of 'pre-Hartnell' Doctors... The best thing about these continuity errors in a show about time travel is that you can fix these on screen and they cease to be errors. The Doctor can be 'half-human' be Time Lord reckoning, with incarnations before his first if he was genetically altered. And that is just one of a myriad of possibilities

Most of the "myriad of possibilities" are dumb. The problem is, Moffat doesn't know how to distinguish between the good from the just plain dumb.
Silly continuity errors are best forgotten, not turned into moronic plot devices.

This was an absolutely fantastic episode, and a true tour de force for Peter Capaldi as the Doctor. The climax, in which the Doctor spends more than two billion years breaking his way through an impenetrable barrier, was both stunning and inspirational. As one of my fellow players noted while we were discussing the episode, it's the sort of triumphant solution that we all would like to pull off while playing the Doctor in our role-playing campaigns. To say that I'm eagerly awaiting the season finale would be an understatement.

The Doctor can be 'half-human' be Time Lord reckoning, with incarnations before his first if he was genetically altered. And that is just one of a myriad of possibilities Agreed. An enterprising GM or player (or series writer) can develop their games based on past unresolved canon content. Thanks to some recent show continuity it's entirely possible to retroactively explain what some see as errors in the show's continuity and it's also ripe with story seeds. The pre-Hartnell Doctors in Brain of Morbius: This could, should it be called for, now be justified as being a previous regeneration cycle. Just how old is the Doctor really? He seems to slip during The Sea Devils and says to Captain Hart “I've been a scientist for several thousand...” Years? Or was that merely an alien measurement of several hundred Earth years and just semantics? Does the Doctor remember this past regeneration cycle (Memory Worm?) or is he actively denying it (as he denies the War Doctor)? This could be an entire season arc for a game. As for the fan reluctance over a half-human Doctor, what's wrong with that idea? I've never been opposed to this. Human plus Time Lord combined is greater than pure Time Lord. Doctor/Donna proved this. Humanity adds that spark of creativity and indomitably and stubbornness that Time Lords just don't have. It's always been known the Doctor is very different from your average Time Lord. He's a rebel Plus it would explain the Doctor's love for Earth, his desire to meddle, his wanderlust et al.Rather than diminishing his mystique, I'd say it makes him larger and more mythical.

I've never understood the fan reaction to the half-human thing, that it's something to hate or, at best, ignore. In Heaven Sent, it was what immediately popped into my mind when the Doctor said he is the hybrid. But of course, the explanation could turn out to be something entirely different.

- Because it contradicts 50 years of otherwise established storytelling.
- Because it's trite and overused: Spock is half-human and struggles with his duality; Troi is half-Betazoid and struggles with her duality; Torres and half-Klingon and struggles with her duality; Hermione is a mud-blood and struggles to hide her ancestry; Carthoris of Helium is half-Martian, but this is entirely a boon for him; Delenn becomes half-Minbari and... well, you know.
- Because it's biologically impossible.
- Because it cheapens the idea that the Doctor is an alien.
- Because the Doctor is mysterious because we don't know his past, something that Moffat just can't leave alone.
- Because Doctor Who is supposed to be about what the Doctor does, not who he is. That's why the title is Doctor WHO.

I think the way it was handled in the American movie was pretty cheesy, but as a concept I'm not entirely against it. If they use it here, and it serves a purpose in the story, then at least they're closing off that plot-hole from the past and it could give an explanation for other things like the first Doctor only having one heart. It's all in how they use it really.

This episode was just fantastic in so many ways. The writing, directing, lighting, Capaldi, set design, plot. All of it was incredible.
I do have one small issue with it, and I'm probably alone in thinking it. We should have never seen Clara face (except in the painting/flashback) in this episode. The Doctor being unable to look her in the eyes was an extremely powerful motif and I feel like having his subconscious actually use Clara's voice was a mistake.

I understand why they did it; (the whole coming to terms with what happened thing), but I think that undercut the powerful emotional ties.

The most disappointing thing about the episode was having to wait 11 episodes for the series to really find it's stride. The Zygon double-bill was a great continuation of the 50th anniversary stuff, which is not a bad thing, but overall I've not been impressed with this series at all.
I just hope next week isn't all build up... build up... build up... build up... Aaaaand see you at Christmas for the resolution where we hand-wave away Gallifrey again!

Loved this story. Just so well done, creepy and thought provoking. The only idea from this that I don't like is that the Doctor we have been following for the last fifty years is actually dead and no we are watching a clone with his memories. Not sure I like that.
