Hello everyone,
I have the opportunity to run a one-shot of DW:AiTaS for one player either tomorrow or the day after tomorrow and I am looking for ideas. The player isn't completely new to roleplaying an isn't a "fan", but has seen new Who and Torchwood.
One thing, the player isn't interested in playing the Doctor or Doctor Companion style adventures.

How about a Time Agent, then (like Captain Jack), or a UNIT agent investigating a shady company that turns out to have some alien involvement.
What sort of stories/movies/books etc does this person like - perhaps there is something you could draw from that and then give a Whoniverse spin to?

The only vague clues I have are that the player likes sci-fi, supernatural stuff and (TV) not too much blood and gore. Both, the Time Agent and UNIT agent are good ideas! Keep 'em coming

It would probably be a good thing to have a fairly capable character for a solo run. I think that a Time Agent would be a good choice for a an action oriented sci-fi style adventure. Or you could go completely the other way and have a very normal person who's very normal life suddenly collides with some Whoniverse weirdness - sort of like Sally Sparrow. This sort of character might be good for a supernatural investigation type adventure. Your player would be relying heavily on story points in this case I would imagine.

My first thought would also have been "something they definitely like" but I see that's already been addressed. A Sally-type accidental hero could certainly work, or a more dedicated investigator looking into reports of "lights in the sky" or "mysterious disappearances" or something like that. This means you could feature something Whoniversal or a supernatural/alien mystery that isn't necessarily from the setting. An adventure like Voices In The Dark or The Games Of Kings could work there.

I would worry for a one-off, with someone who doesn't have automatic "buy-in", that a Sally Sparrow-type (or other "normal human") could be a bit of a hard sell - as statistically they might appear rather weak.
There's also the danger that they could make one wrong move and suddenly find themselves rather dead ;-)
While I'm certainly not advocating a "superhero"-type of character, a competent secret agent type (e.g. a Time Agent), that one could see working on their own, is probably the safest bet.

One thing, the player isn't interested in playing the Doctor or Doctor Companion style adventures. Well, why play a DW game anyway? If he actually knows new Who and Torchwood, why not mimic the Torchwood pilot and have him run a character that by some means is drawn into an investigation and thereby coming into contact with Jack, The Doctor or Gwen. He can then end up joining UNIT or TW or something else, if this one-shot grows into something more. If not, you have at least established the background for a new organisation that you might use yourself in your own game Win-win situation. There you go

First of all, I like the DW:AiTaS system, secondly the player isn't a "traditional" roleplayer, but thought a DW game could be fun. The player feels that playing the Doctor or a companion would be too hard/too much canon to deal with.

...secondly the player isn't a "traditional" roleplayer, but thought a DW game could be fun. Well, that's all the reason you need right there Have a great time. Maybe he'll like the game as much as you and you'll get him playing more often!

use a custom time lord that way it is what ever the player makes him or her . it will be about whole new meddler in time to fight the daleks and to stop the Cybermen. give the new time lord some npc companions that need saving from the bad guy.

Yeah, it was my fault.
"When in doubt, have a man come through a door with a gun in his hand." — Raymond Chandler
I took this a bit too far. It escalated into the ridiculous, with among other things meaningless deaths and the most rubbish evacuation of a building ever. I gave the player too much freedom and the character had too little plot buy-in.
Combine all this with a misunderstanding between me and the player over the alien.
Here's the good news. I get a second chance later this month, started prepping a better adventure, reading GM'ing tips, better integrate the character(same player, same character) in the plot, etc.

My advice: Take the Time Agent angle and use the 'Knight of the Comet' adventure from the 11th Doctor Adventure book (which you can download for $5 at RPGNow).
I don't want to spoil it for anyone here who might play it, but it's a fairly straightforward time travel adventure with some non-standard baddies and interesting locales. It was written by Andy Peregrine and he writes some cracking adventures.
It is specifically well built for a non-Time Lord character (a Time Agent level character, for instance) or set of characters.

I run a Dr Who game at a convention bi-yearly. I never run the game with the Doctor involved, the players are the centre of the plot. My group were sent by Torchwood to investigate possible alien tech at an archaeological site in a Welsh mine. They found themselves in a TARDIS (not the doctors) which activated when it sensed them onboard and has begun bouncing around time and space. So far it seems to work well, I can get them anywhere I want them to be and for the most part the group work with me plotwise. I hope yours goes well too. Feel free to contact me if you want to bounce ideas.

However, I am determined to improve.
