Does/will your Who game have a theme tune, either actually played or just mentioned to the players? If so, what is it? Is it the actual Who theme (if so which version?), or some other piece of music/song? Personally, and I dunno why, I'm a big fan of the theme music used in McCoy's run. I'm considering playing it at the beginning of every session to signal that it's time to stop chatting about whatever and start playing

Either... Dangermen by Jools Holland or Sarahbande by Sarah Brightman. Can't decide. But since I don't have a game to run yet, I've got time.
On an unrelated note, though - love the New Who theme music but not impressed by either Torchwood or Sarah Jane Adventures themes. Can't win 'em all.

I'm going completely new... I'm using 'Eternal' by Evanescence. Its a nice hard instrumental with science fiction undertones and a darker 'action' type feel to it.

Nice. Like Evanescence, have to have a re-listen to that.
There's some wonderful Arena instrumentals that could work.
Since the debacle of the Enterprise theme song, I'd steer well clear of anything with actual lyrics.
And it's both/all versions of the New Who theme. I like the more crunchy nature of the season 4 theme but they're both good. If you ever find me out jogging, gets to the last quarter mile or so and I'll stick on one of the Who themes. They're good to run to.

I'd be tempted to use the classic 'Tom Baker' version, but I'd probably end up using a Whomix theme, to give my campaign some individuality (there's an amazing dub reggae version on there!).

It'll depend on which cmapaign my group decides they wanna take part in first, i figure if they go for the badasses in time and space campaign then some sorta rock soundtrack and if they go for one of the more intriquing campaign concepts ive come up with then probably something instrumental that sets the tone without getting in the way of the actual game.

Same with me - it all depends on what type of campaign we eventually embark on, but it would certainly be instrumental - no Star Trek: Enterprise debacle here, thank you very much.

However: This is the first time that I've heard of the whomix site. I can see that I'm going to be busy downloading. Thanks for mentioning it - have some Karma. [Well, I've just tried to give Karma - not sure if it worked though. I may have failed my Technology skill ]

Well, I would use 'No Second Chances' by Anthony Perry from the whomix site, if it weren't for the quotes from the Tenth Doctor included in it.
Failing that, I don't suppose anyone knows where I can download a copy of the opening and closing themes used for the Big Finish Paul McGann audioplays (at least between Storm Warning and Minuet in Hell' which is as far as I've got)?
If not I suppose I could use some audio editing to adapt either one of those themes to suit my needs.
Edit: Trust me to answer my own question...found the theme on youtube and downloaded it with RealPlayer. My apologies. ^_^;

FYI,
This is slightly off topic, and not meant as a plug, but as a pointer to a very useful tool. I wanted to have more control over sound effects and background music when running games. As I looked, I came across a piece of software, designed for podcasts, called StudioRack. (studiorack.com)..
It works really well for quick sound effects at the click of a button (or shortcut key), like the TARDIS sound effect, or a well placed 'EXTERMINATE!!'. In addition, it can simultaneously play multiple wav or mp3 samples, so you don't have to stop the BG music to play the sound effects. It can loop, manage volumes (in case one audio file is much louder than others, or you want to keep the BG music in the BG),
I've found it to be very cool to control the mood with music, and add in little details when needed.
PS> If you like the features, but don't want to pay to save your work, you can look around for 'CastBlaster', the precursor to StudioRack. It has the same core functions, but will save what you set. The only caveat, is that it doesn't support multiple 'saves'. It just saves how it was setup last.

Something on a cheaper budget would be to create a webpage on your home computer/laptop that links to wav and mp3 files as well - you can either embed a player, or just let the system handle the associations. You can have multiple instances of sound files playing with some programs (other than windows media player).
For example, the VLC - videolan player (a free media player) has a setting in the options (under Interface) to allow only one, or as many instances as you like (the default). So every time you click on an audio file, it would create a new player to play it and you could have several running at the same time.

check out castblaster. I just use the free version.. means i can't save the audio setups for given weeks, but have to just tweak it each week to prep for play. Aside from that, it works like a dream. If you google around, you can still find a download for it. I even used it to prerecord some background music with timed explosions and screams so that i could just press play in a dramatic scene involving a politician giving a speech (delivered by me the GM), and in the middle of it, explosions rocked the gaming table (thanks to my subwoofer). The looks on the player's faces was worth the effort to put it together.

Just found an RPG specific software for audio playlists. Seems very nice. It is called RPG Deck. rpgdeck.peppermill-marketing.com/It can use mp3 and wav files. It can handle playing background tracks, as well as simultaneous sound effects.

There's been sounds that Big Finish uses for their plays that I've thought would be wonderful for a game. Primarily the background Dalek noise that pervades any scene with them - the hum of their machinery. It's very evokative.
I just haven't gone to the lengths of tracking down where they get their sound effects (the ones that aren't generated in house that is).

I wanted something evocative and instrumental at the same time; I've used tracks from Immediate Music before, and this one, Mercutio, is my choice. On my own mix, I added a Tardis dematerialisation sound at the end.

Chello!
Maybe I'm just deranged, but my opening music for the game will be the classic Tom Baker and the end credits will be Timelord's "Doctoring the Tardis."

I'm going with "Sleep Now" from the Dark City soundtrack. It has just the right mix of sci-fi and creepy for my Project Bluebox game.
