In the year 4872, people are still playing football. It is the quadrennial Galaxy Cup, when planetary states of both human and alien origin send their best athletes for the tradition, passion and power of competing for the galactic championship. The Doctor comes to the host planet of New Venus with nothing more on his mind than enjoying a few matches.
But, as always in his life, nothing is that simple. A crime syndicate is attempting to rig the tournament. Terrorists seeking to overthrow the government of New Venus (which is not as stable as it looks) are looking to make a grand statement by taking one of the teams hostage. And the Interior Minister seeks to use the games to cement his own bid for power over the beloved but ineffectual President.
Once more, the Doctor has come to the wrong place at precisely the right time....

...is this proper football (soccer) or the American version? I'm presuming soccer. American football hasn't really spread beyond America (although Canada has its own variant on the game). However, if you want to play it as Gridiron (which is a common British term for American Football if I remember correctly), you can.

If it was American Football, the tournament name could be something like Ultrabowl. I can see other sports being used too, just to play up the oddness. Cricket (particularly if playing the 5th Doctor) or croquet or volleyball or quidditch (with high tech in lieu of magic) or whatever.

Well there is also Aussie Football too (and rugby). Call it the Death Bowl and make it Aussie rules - on the planet of New Australia!

Yeah the spiked cleats and knuckle dusters really brought the game back to what it was meant to be (still bet the magpies havn't won a premiershiip though)
