Hullo, folks,
Here is the first scenario that I am running for my DW: AiTaS game.
Ghosts in the Machine
The TARDIS arrives on the planet Earth in London, England, circa 2002. The Time Lord and any companions that accompany him find that things are not what they appear to be, when a newspaper talks about a rash of disappearances at Nordstrom Security Services, a local company.
The Time Lord believes he has heard of the symptoms of these disappearances before, and decides to investigate. Arriving at Nordstrom Security, the Time Lord is warned off by the people who work there, and is particularly threatened by Eric Hale, the Nordstrom Chief of Security. When the Time Lord and his assistants sneak into the Nordstrom facilities, the Time Lord disabling the security systems with relative ease, they discover the cause of the problem...the Usuangir, an ionic and electrical form of life.
The Usuangir arrived on Earth some four months ago, crash landing during a terrible ionic storm in near-Earth orbit, and were found by Eric Hale and a team of Nordstrom scientists on the roof of the structure. Believing the alien life form that took the form of electrical and ionic interference, the Nordstrom team allowed it access to their systems, and the Usuangir took the opportunity, taking refuge in the Nordstrom systems. Accessing the system’s databanks, the Usuangir appealed to the humans for help through visual images on their surveillance devices. The Nordstrom employees took these to be a glitch in the system, and attempted repairs – which the Usuangir perceived as an attack. Now, with disappearances of employees from the building, reports of these employees appearing on the surveillance camera screens and other sources of visual feedback, and the seeming possession of the building’s equipment, Nordstrom is in deep trouble. But things are just getting started, as the Usuangir are becoming more and more frustrated at their imprisonment...
Can the Time Lord stop the Usuangir from destroying the Nordstrom building and all the employees within, and can he convince the Usuangir to release the employees that have been taken prisoner? More importantly, can the Time Lord and his companions assist the Usuangir in finally gaining their freedom and leaving Earth?
Stuff to Be Done: Gain entry to the Nordstrom Security complex. Figure out the nature of the problem, and identify the Usuangir. Possibly convince Eric Hale of the existence of the creatures, and get him to let them go peaceably. Survive any possible attack by the Usuangir.
Antagonists: The Usuangir. Stopping the Nordstrom scientists from destroying the creatures, and letting any more humans come to harm due to the power of the Usuangir.
Action Scenes: The Nordstrom employees, particularly Eric Hale, will resent the Time Lord’s interference, and will come to believe that he is out to interfere with their operations and the normal day-to-day business at Nordstrom. The Usuangir must be made to understand what they are doing, and will likely attack the Time Lord and his companions at some point.
Problems: Eric Hale has been skimming off the top of the Nordstrom Security pie, and the Usuangir represent a means of learning about this. It’s in Eric’s best interest for this information not to come to light. There is also a chance that one of the Time Lord’s companions could conceivably become a victim of the Usuangir, and find themselves trapped as an image on a surveillance device.
Things to Consider: The Usuangir are a dangerous race, if handled properly by the GM, and the players may have unexpected problems dealing with them. The Usuangir cannot escape the Nordstrom Security premises without assistance, and their ship will have to be recovered.
Things to be Prepared For: If the Time Lord and the companions cock things up too badly, there is a chance that one or several of them may become a victim of the Usuangir and find themselves as electronic images on surveillance equipment. In such an event, the Time Lord will have to rescue them as well as the other humans who have become ghosts in the machine.
Continuing the Adventure: The Usuangir can be used as potential allies or foes again in the future. Nordstrom Security may benefit from some of the scientific advances that may be gained through exposure to the Usuangir. This could have consequences in a future story down the road.
