en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emu_WarA pretty odd point in Australia’s history. Would make for the basis of a good pure historical. Although, there’s room to add a more science fiction element to it as well.

Weird I was just going to post about this the other day. The Invasion of the Cosmic Emus, with that ability to dodge bullets and ram into vehicles. And well as history says the Emus won, so in a period of Whoniverse history Australia would have been ruled by cosmic Emus, yeah now that would be hilarious.

Although, there’s room to add a more science fiction element to it as well. A favourite historical oddity, and a popular subject over at alternatehistory.com, such as The Rise of the Great Emu Empire which posits some extraterrestrial influence. So drop your PCs into the early stage of the war, with some locals telling stories of weird (and organised) behaviour on the part of the emus, and have the Lewis guns arrive only to find the birds developing intelligence.... Cue aircraft, artillery, armoured cars, aerial bombing and poison gas.
Oh and this thread has some ideas for the names and personalities of the emu leaders.

That or Doctor Marshall Manor Meyer was being careless and dumped some chemical into the area which heightened the birds intelligence? Then they proceeded to fashion weaponry and the like from the junk he left behind.

I could quite easily see that being the case. And when Doctor Marshall Manor Meyer is confronted with what his ‘potions’ has done to the local Emu population merely pauses and then goes on to state had he known it had that side effect it would have cost extra!

Torchwood Down Under dealing with alien or mutated or cyber enhanced emus sounds pretty good for a campaign, not only that but Australia does have some aggressive wildlife not just Emus.

That’s quite an amusing image. Torchwood Cardiff has to deal with Bilis Manger while the Australia branch has an enterprising snake oil salesman as a regular antagonist!

I was thinking a bit more subtle (though of course there's always 'leakage' from parallel Earths). Plenty of weird events in Australian history (including people missing the damn place), with disappearances and so on. I don't know if you, or anyone here, is familiar with A. Bertram Chandler (wiki) but he developed several alternate Australias, including one where events at Glenrowan went radically differently and led to Australian independence; perhaps thing might leak through from there?

It was more of a joke there to be honest, but Mad Max did have the oil crisis of the 70s as a backdrop so torchwood may have to deal with human biker gangs stealing shall we say alien fuel to power their motorcycles perhaps?

I do rather like the idea of Doctor Marshall Manor Meyer being Torchwood Down Under’s equivalent of Public Enemy Number One. Even if he has only shown up in Australia a few times. And no doubt he’s blissfully unaware of his status. It does make me wonder if this branch of Torchwood is still active come the 21st century.

In fact, it could be the case that a few descendants of the uplifted Emus are still alive come the modern day and are kept in some secret sanctuary. Torchwood Down Under or UNIT have to keep an eye on them regularly as their intelligence makes them a formidable force and they don’t want them getting ideas. Not to mention they can’t just cull them as technically they’re a new species and have a few rights.

Not near to the Emu population but they can always travel if necessary.

Or perhaps Torchwood Australia split off into part of ASIO in '49? Oooo, Somerton Man time. Or perhaps, like GUBU, they're buried inside the acronymic morass of ASIS/ASIO/ASS/DSB/DIO/ONA (et cetera) and have no official connection to Torchwood. That doesn't mean TA hasn't unofficially continued.....

Perth seems ideal for something like that, its located Western Australia and close to where the Emu war took place, so it does seem idea there if we go by them having a HQ or facility within a town/city

Actually, on reviewing my notes I find I posted much of my collection of Australian weirdness here and here. They cover
- The sinking of the SS Gothenburg.
- Speculations about Pine Gap and the domes of RAINFALL.
- The disappearance of the wrecks of HNLMS De Ruyter, HNLMS Java and HNLMS Kortenaer.
- Black Mountain.
- The mysterious disappearance of the schooner Patanela just outside Sydney harbour.
- The British Rocket Group's experiments in Woomera.
- The use of Parkes Observatory for Apollo 11 communications.
- The Birdman of the Coorong.
- Lassiter's Reef
- The curious disappearance of Lamont Young.
- Those strange falls of hail in Alice Springs.
As Bryson put it:

I agree with Bryson’s quote regarding the place. I think in the Whoniverse, Australia would be somewhat overlooked due to its sheer distance from all the alien activity going on across Europe. Although clearly, there are still mysteries afoot that need investigating.
