“Everything has its time and everything inevitably comes to an end. I’m afraid that’s just the natural order of things.”
“With the greatest of respect sir, surely that’s a matter of opinion?”
The End of the Universe. It’s a terrifying concept which many of us would rather not think about and no doubt has contributed to its fair share of existential musings over the centuries. And as we all know, it’s a concept that Doctor Who has tackled on the odd occasion.
In the excellent Bernice Summerfield series we witnessed the end of an alternate universe brought on by the actions of a certain villainous Time Lord while as shown in ‘Utopia’ we witnessed the desperate struggles of the last of humanity.
But what of everyone else? The Daleks, the Cybermen, the Sontarans, the various immortal and godlike species which inhabit this universe. What are they up to during this time? If anything?
Not to mention, the once vast and all encompassing organisations and alliances such as the Shadow Proclamation and the Galactic Federation. If they even still exist, how are they upholding law and order in an ever lawless universe?
Whether your PCs are merely time travellers who are stranded in this terrifying point of history (or is it post-history?) or native inhabitants of this bleak time period merely desperate to survive this idea would hopefully make for a darker, harsher and most importantly a more intimate campaign. Where there is plenty at stake and simultaneously nothing to lose. And with I hope, plenty of storytelling opportunities.
How you depict such a campaign is of course entirely up to the will of the GM. Could make for an interesting examination and philosophical look on mortality with plenty of small victories or a more hopeful one where due to the actions of your PCs, they are able to prevent the end of all things and finally create a brighter future.
