www.doctorwho.tv/news-and-features/neil-patrick-harris-joins-doctor-who We do not know which character he is playing, from the looks of things on Twitter people are speculating its going to be either the Valeyard or the Celestial Toymaker, could even be a Victorian doctor based off outfit design either way I am looking forward to see him within the episode!

Thought id also share the tweet announcing it as well, it has 2 heart emojis + a diamond, makes me think he is playing a time lord character hence why potentially Valeyard

Honestly wouldn’t surprise me if he was playing yet another unseen incarnation of the Doctor. If only because that would make headlines with such titles as “The first American to play the Doctor” and bring the programme some much needed publicity.

From that picture alone, my brain went "Celestial Toymaker" but I could see the Valeyard too. Can't wait to see who he's playing, I really like NPH.

The common consensus seems to be that he’s playing the Celestial Toymaker. Although from what we’ve seen from the photos and set footage, he strikes me as far more theatrical and over the top than what we’re used to from the character. Mind you, when you cast Neil Patrick Harris I guess we should expect theatricality.
Honestly I’m more convinced he’s a separate entity who possesses the ability to warp time or reality.

I think the two hearts and a diamond seem to be generic announcement tease for the Doctor Who 60th Anniversary Year rather than a direct point towards a character, although I could be wrong. My money is on the Toymaker.

Entirely possible. Personally considering the reputation the Doctor has in the universe he must have a few legitimate copycats or people seemingly wishing to emulate him.

I just has a sudden thought relating to this. Neil Patrick Harris suit the one where he is wearing glasses looks similar to what the Doctor was wearing when he was repairing K9 in Meglos, just a sudden thought,

Under the Neil Patrick Harris Wikipedia television filmography he's listed as playing "The Toymaker" in the 60th anniversary specials.
