Another idea for a modern day scenario, perhaps for the Misifit Mob, though it could be adapted for a pure UNIT campaign, time travellers (preferably with a connection to the period) or similar. It fits in any period after ~2005.
The Urban Explorers.
According to Wikipedia:
Urban exploration (often shortened as UE, urbex and sometimes known as roof-and-tunnel hacking) is the exploration of manmade structures, usually abandoned ruins or hidden components of the man-made environment. Photography and historical interest/documentation are heavily featured in the hobby and it sometimes involves trespassing onto private property. Urban exploration is also called draining (a specific form of urban exploration where storm drains or sewers are explored), urban spelunking, urban rock climbing, urban caving, building hacking, or mousing.
The Urban Explorers.
“And finally” Captain Sandford enunciated carefully, “Any Other Business?”.
Her tone made it clear that anything brought up had better be relevant and concise, lest the speaker wish to incur her wrath.
It had been a longer than usual, but generally successful and productive, meeting, perhaps, he thought cynically, because Doctor Horne was distracted by the new modifications to his chair and Sadie was absent.
“Err, yes I have something”, a quiet voice, tinged with hesitancy, spoke up.
Captain Sandford looked surprised and looked at Alex enquiringly. “Something strange in cyberspace again”.
Alexandra Macale winced at the term but nodded.
“Yes actually there is. Is everyone familiar with ‘Urban Exploration’”.
Malik spoke up, taking a break from stroking the invisible monkey that might or might not actually be there, “Exploring abandoned buildings, tunnels and stuff? Without permission.”
“Trespassing in other words”, Julie piped in.
“That’s it, more or less. Gaining unauthorised access to locations, usually derelict commercial or industrial sites and exploring them. Often with video recording. Anyway there’s a pair of girls who have a YouTube channel with anonymised videos of themselves doing it. Mainly in the Midlands, where there’s plenty of suitable sites”
“And?” Captain Sandford put an entire sentence’s worth of emphasis in that word.
“One of them has disappeared and one is in hospital raving” Alex finished. “Raving about ‘them’ and ‘they made me do it’ and such”. Alex seemed a little deflated.
“Hmm. I’m not sure if that’s enough to justify out poking in” said the Captain, “but you Parks and Johnson check into it and see if it justifies investigation. Is that all?”
No-one had anything to add.
