as said in the other thread, Queen Mary the first had a interesting life. This thread is for collecting anecdotes about her life for time meddlers or aliens to intervene in.

Hmm, she's in my old General Notes file. Which drastically needs tidying and re0indexing.
Firstly there's her (excessive?) love of gambling. This was her biggest indulgence1, a little surprising given her general portrayal as being a religious zealot and holding strong morals. Her privy purse accounts (which are, I believe, online somewhere but I didn't save the link alas) reveal frequent and fairly serious amounts of money lost (and won) in this way. There was one interesting occasion where she was placing money on a game of bowls (a common pastime of the era, remember Drake and the Armada) and tried to borrow cash from her servants; they refused and so Mary waged the next day’s breakfast. Her account book includes the entry: There's a scenario, or at least a scene of one, in there.
Then there's the Rose Diamond. Which was not a diamond but rather a rose shaped pendant comissioned by Phillip for their wedding with two diamond and a very large pearl (~70 carats). The larger of the diamonds was the "Grande diamond", a large, clear, 'table-cut' stone.
- Amusingly, though unsurprisingly the stone had a convoluted history. Phillip inheireted it from his mother (Isabella) who'd been given it my his father (Charles) who'd married her after repudiating his betrothal to....Mary Tudor.
- Probably not something a sensible visitor would mention loudly during the ceremony...
The diamond was valued at 28,000 ducats. Which is around three thousand pounds sterling. It's difficult to say exactly how much the broach was worth but probably one-twentieth (or more) of the entire English treasury take for a year is a reasonable comparison.
1. Mary was also a lover of fashion and dancing. She was noted as a very graceful and expert dancer, as well as an outstanding musician and was a competent Latin scholar.

A few things to remember when dealing with Mary, or planning a scenario involving her.
- She's intelligent. Assuming she's an idiot is likely to be a serious mistake.
- She's inordinately fond of strawberries (and cream).
- She's personally brave and willing to stand up; during the Wyatt rebellion in 1554, Mary refused to take the advice to stay away from events and personally confronted the rebels head on, making an impassioned speech at the Guildhall. She's also stubborn and a little insecure (blame her father).
- She's a good speaker and can inspire people. Initially she was immensely popular with the people; when Mary was proclaimed queen on 19JUL1553, people rejoiced in the streets and bells rang out across the country.
- She's a capable leader; when Mary received the news of Edward’s death she rallied her forces (at Framlington Castle in Suffolk), assembled her troops and prepared to fight for her crown. Mary overthrew Lady Jane Grey in a well orchestrated coup d’etat (the only successful revolt against government in sixteenth-century England). When necessary she had evaded capture, rallied support during a crisis and proved herself to be a decisive, courageous and politically able leader.
- Yes she had several hundred people executed for political reasons; her father had seventy thousand killed for similar reasons.
- She loved her clothes and preferred expensive and sumptuous fabrics (but then most of the nobility did); while the annual cost of the 'Great Wardrobe' was considerable in her early years as queen (owing to her coronation and wedding) at about £18,000, it dropped thereafter to around £6,000. Slightly slightly less than her father’s expenses...
- Her heart is buried in a silver chalice beneath the floor (near the altar) of the Chapel Royal at St. James Castle in London.

maybe she could be replaced by a alien? It's a bit predictable. I'd suggest: 1. A Bracewell style self-aware android who doesn't know she's an AI. Some assistance in faking her 'death' may be needed. Now, who created her, why and where's the real Mary?
2. A time traveller who replaced Mary after her unfortunate and accidental death, in order to preserve History As It Is Written. Now she (or he) needs some assistance. Shimmer on the blink at awkward moments?
- Unless she's lying of course and has a Sinister Plot afoot.... (Harlequin? Morgana?)
3. Mary is in fact Mary Tudor. But she's special, perhaps possessed by an alien presence (I'm thinking something like the Timewyrm) or under the influence of Something Man Was Not Meant To Know. But what is going on and who is responsible?
- Oh look Doctor Dee is in town (which is more-or-less historical); he returned to England in 1551, investigates various oddities (including a 'magical gemstone') in London in 1552. And he faced charges of treason against Mary in 1555.

hmmm maybe something like a tesceleta assassinates her? Despite the Elizabethan propagandising she's not really in Hitler's league.
