Just a little idea that popped into my head.
Everywhere the party goes there appears a chess set perhaps its just a generic plastic one you'd buy at a store or maybe its an ornate one with gold and silver squares and figures carved in the likeness of various alien races in black and white pearl. Different sets suitable to the area they're found but always there on a shelf, set up on a table, perhaps sitting out on a park grass but always there. After the party first notes them the next place they go to has a white pawn moved and then it waits, waits for them to make a move. Wherever they go in time and space the chess sets follow and every time the white pieces are moved there's a situation that needs them to intervene a base under siege, a spaceship in trouble, an invasion of earth. Different threats, different challenges and each time they move on the chess pieces have moved. If they made a move on black white makes a corresponding move in return, if they don't move black but do act to deal with the situation a piece on the black board will have moved with white responding.
What is the signficance of the chess set? Is some mysteriuos force using real living beings to simulate their game? Is it just a lonely traveller in time and space looking for some enjoyment and perhaps most important...What happens when one side or the other wins?

I like it. It's weird, not obviously threatening, but suggestive of something behind the scenes knowing where they're going before they do. Good for typing a series of adventures together while slightly freaking the players.
