The title says it all really - it's been confirmed in the new Doctor Who Magazine that this year's special will be broadcast in the UK on New Year's Day rather than Christmas Day.

You know, I'm actually not too upset about this. On the one-hand, while I would've liked to have seen a Thirteenth Doctor Christmas Special, it is an opportunity to try something new (which is really what this whole season has been about, anyways). I know that The End of Time was technically a New Year's Special, but that was set during Christmas and it was more about The Tenth Doctor's regeneration than anything having to do with New Year's. Also, maybe Titan Comics will do a Christmas Special One-Shot similar to what they did for the Twelfth Doctor Year One when he met the Celestial Toymaker again.
The only question is; anyone up for a round of auld lang syn New Year's Day?

I don't get why people are upset about this. I was tired of Christmas specials after watching the second one.

I don't get why people are upset about this. I was tired of Christmas specials after watching the second one. Personally, I haven't heard anyone upset about this. But if they, are I'd imagine it's for some petty reason like "Doctor Who should ALWAYS have a Christmas Special! That's the way it's always been!" to which I would respond by pointing out how that's like saying Jason has always been the killer in Friday the 13th since the first movie. Like I said, it would've been nice to have a Christmas Special, but this season has been about everything being new so that we can await the inevitable return of old monsters in the near-future. I'll be curious to see what they do. And who knows? Maybe we'll get a Christmas Special next year if we're lucky. I know where I'll be New Year's day though!

The upset has been about how Doctor Who is out of ideas because they can't come up with any new ideas for a Christmas special. It's a pretty ridiculous thing to worry about.

Again, I restate my points; 1) This whole season has been about being new; new Doctor, new TARDIS, new Companions, new Monsters, new Planets, and new ways of storytelling. Having a New Year's Day Special is an interesting way to shake things up. 2) Again, the complaints have about the same weight in their arguments as someone being upset about Jason Voorhees not being the killer in a Friday the 13th movie when Jason was the killer since the first movie (spoilers: he wasn't).

You don't need to restate; I'm not the one making the argument. I'm just reporting what I've heard.

I think at least in the UK, the Special missing from Christmas day is like the Christmas day meal being moved to New Year's Day. The occasion is something we have come to expect and it has woven itself into the fabric of Christmas Day and become a Tradition. As any psychologist will tell you, Traditions are sacrosanct and messing with them will make people unhappy and provoke a response.
It's perfectly understandable that some people are disappointed.

The Doctor has only been a Christmas "fixture" since 2005. It isn't that bib a deal and I ,for one, will be absolutely delighted not to have to watch the Doctor pretend to enjoy the most over-commercialised of Earth's holidays for the fourteenth year in a row.

There have been some poor Christmas episodes but some good ones too.In my view this is something to be concerned about and I don't think we should accept the nonsense spouted out about running out of ideas for Christmas-it doesn't have to have a Christmas theme to be a Christmas Special after all.

I imagine the actual thinking was more like, "Christmas specials have been done to death. How about New Year instead?"

Personally, I've grown weary of Christmas-themed Doctor Who stories and, thematically, there are clear links between Doctor Who and New Year's. I welcome the change and I'm eager to see what they do with this year's special.

I'm in two minds on this. On the one hand, for any TV programme to have a Christmas special broadcast on Christmas Day has a certain prestige about it. Having a special on New Year's Day not so much. And a prime-time Christmas Day broadcast is likely to have a significantly higher audience than on New Year's Day.
On the other hand, having an episode with a Christmas theme crow-barred into it has become stale. And before anyone says a Christmas Special doesn't need a Christmas theme, yes it does (in the UK at least). There are very very few programmes shown on Christmas Day that don't theme themselves around Christmas in some way, particular during prime time. It may well be that the BBC schedulers moved Doctor Who to New Year's Day precisely because Chris Chibnall didn't want to have to incorporate Christmas into the story. If so, to me that's a price worth paying.
