Hey, everyone.
So something else I noticed that doesn't get brought up a lot is how the companion characters bow out when all is said and done. I'll give examples of how my game's companion characters exited here:
Murphy- Had a falling out with Kanya over how to deal with a sound-frequency eating race that had decimated an entire civilization of species with the perfect vocal chords essentially making the latter race an endangered species. He chose to stay with them especially after he'd taking a liking to one of the female members around his age and eventually married her.
Lee- Decided to get more opportunities for an education and accepted Eddie Gregory's offer to begin a scholarship at Lunar University.
Cam- Left behind by Kanya as the Time Lady was warned to keep Cam safe. Seeing as how the Time War had just been announced by Davros, Kanya tricked Cam into exiting the TARDIS outside of her house shortly after she left and then locked Cam out before saying farewell and departing.
Feel free to list suggestions on how the companion characters could bow out in your game.

I do find it mildly annoying that most of the companions nowadays never seem to leave the Doctor of their own volition. That's what I liked about Martha, there was literally nothing stopping her from just carrying on travelling with the Doctor and she decided she'd had enough.
As for games I've been a part of, In the first game I ran I had to write out a PC from the group. The reasons why, I don't want to go into on a public forum but needless to say we were suddenly down one player. In that campaign Iris Wildthyme and a couple of her companions were recurring characters (one of whom was the best friend of the PC. We agreed to have this character decide to travel with the Iris' group to be closer to her friend.
On the other side of the fence I had a my first character leave the Tardis crew. The full lore of our campaign is so convoluted by this stage that explaining everything would take to long but I'll try to give you some background. Basically we started the campaign with everyone turning into Harold Saxon and our characters were rescued from this fate by a TARDIS AI. Over the course of a few adventures we grew closer as a team but my character was not holding up well with the idea that his world and everyone he knew was effectively gone.
He stuck with the crew through thick and thin but once earth had been restored, he decided he wanted to go back to be with his family. He'll miss the adventures but he just wants to be back with his friends and family and to have a normal life again.

We once had a PC who was a Bane left over from the failed Bubbleshock! invasion. Unable to return home, as he would immediately be eaten for his failure he took up work as a post office worker. Despite not exactly the most confident of fellows, he, strangely enough, ended up forming an amusing double act with our Slitheen player who, as I had mentioned previously, had been masquerading as a wartime music hall comedian. They were best friends who partook in many memorable moments such as singing a duet of 'Life Could Be a Dream' to entertain a group of music-loving alien invaders. They remained friends until the end when the Slitheen sacrificed himself to save a group of children from a Dalek squad.
After his death, the Bane became very withdrawn and forlorn. The group was soon quickly arrested by the Shadow Proclamation (mainly due to the fact that most of the group had criminal records) and in order to spare his friends' life imprisonment and mainly to repent for his role in the Bubbleshock! invasion he made a deal that he alone would serve his friends combined prison sentences. With a little-known fact regarding Bane-Kind being that they live for a very long time. Our resident Time Lord offered to break him out or at least travel forward in time to greet him but he declined saying he wanted to serve his time legitimately and make a fresh start once he was released. Fond farewells were made and the group left Volag-Noc for pastures new. But not before Mortimus left him a present. A holo-recording of Earths greatest musicians and a goodbye message from his deceased Slitheen friend. (Mortimus nipped back in time and got him to record it)
Our Bane PC smiled and began whistling along as 'Bring Me Sunshine' began to play in his cell much to the chagrin of his neighbour in the next cell Baltazar.
So yeah, that's just one example. I might have him show up as an older yet wiser NPC in the future.

The way the Bane chose to take the fall for the team kind of reminds me of the TV Series Spin City. If you've never watched it, it's a satirical comedy about what happens in New York City Hall in the mayor's office. This was one of the final TV Shows Michael J Fox was working on when he discovered he had Parkinson's Disease and when he decided to leave the show as a result, they had a two-part farewell episode where he similarly took the punishment for his friends at the cost of his job at City Hall which had been the one place he ever truly felt at home. There was actually a funny moment in the end where a few months later, he called up saying he'd found a job in Washington DC, although there was some guy who wasn't fond of him named Alex P. Keaton (Fox's character from Family Ties). I love that ending with the hologram recording. If you do decide to bring back the Bane as an NPC, it would be interesting if he started working for the Shadow Proclamation. Kind of like what happened in the final story of Titan Comics' Twelfth Doctor series which heralded the return of Margret Blaine Slitheen now working for the Proclamation herself under a new identity thanks to being re-raised after she de-evolved and grew up all over again. Can't wait to hear more!
