This idea came to me after seeing the movie Battle of the Sexes. I went back and forth on how to do this as a scenario seed, but I ultimately decided to go ahead with this and see what you think. Though I'm not a Tennis Fan, I thought about a 'what if' scenario when I watched the movie and the classic 'good intentions go bad' story with this 'what if' idea.
On May 13, 1973, Bobby Riggs played against Margret Court in tennis to prove that despite being 55 and retired from professional tennis, he could defeat the world's top female tennis player. Though the top female tennis player, Billie Jean King, had initially declined, Margret Court took her place and subsequently lost. However, Billie Jean King stepped up after Court's defeat, and beat Riggs, becoming a strong activist for female equality and proving women could play just as well as men on the court.
The players are in Ramona, California at the first Battle of the Sexes Tennis Match...and are surprised when Riggs looses to Court despite history saying otherwise. Investigations soon reveal that a sponsor offered some 'new vitamins' for Riggs to promote during the game which he had before the match. The man is named Max Mortimer and is (of course) The Meddling Monk. Yep, he's out to try and 'correct' history in the name of 'the greater good.' The Monk believes that if Court had beat Riggs, then women on Earth would be seen just as good as men, perhaps even better if Riggs had originally lost.
Of course, this is not the case. In the new history, Riggs becomes more bitter and angry towards women. He gives up his racket and becomes a politician making things even worse for women to the point where America is in a Civil War against male and female.
The players must go back and stop the Monk from interfering before this new history becomes a permanent fixture.
