This is an expansion of an idea posted by SoulDragon298. You can find that, and several other ideas by him or her, in this thread.
Note that this assumes the background given in the original thread. The Doctor died in the Last Time War, and another Time Lord survivor and group of companions are the focus of the game.
NEW METAL
ASCII Flashback is the most popular technopop band in the world. Known for their attention to detail and elaborate stage shows, they have attracted a large and enthusiastic fanbase. Now the entertainment world is abuzz with rumours of the their latest project.
On launch day, their existing web and social media presence is wiped away, replaced by marketing for "You Will Be Upgraded", their new electronica-influenced concept album and performance art project. Their new spokesperson, who is always wearing two silver earpieces, explains that the band members have been upgraded to "Humanity 2.0", and will be touring the world to share this experience with live audiences. As part of the performance, all members of the band will henceforth only be appearing in costume.
(Not quite the aesthetic I was going for, but you get the idea)
The album explores concepts of posthumanity and cybernetics. The lyrics and imagery seem to be positive toward the concept of partial or total replacement of biological parts with cybernetic ones, and urge humanity to come together in some sort of posthuman collective. Critics interpret this as a satirical warning about technological dystopia, but the band never breaks character to explain their true motivations.
The stage show is spectacular, and has an interestingly interactive element. During the performance of the song "/Wo/Man Becomes Cyberman", lucky contest winners in each tour stop city are invited to come onstage and enter a massive prop that the band calls the "Cyberconverter". On a giant screen at the rear of the stage, each person is shown inside the Cyberconverter, apparently being forcibly turned into a cyborg. What innovative use of CGI! They then exit the other end costumed just like the band members. Reports that many of the contest winners have not contacted their families since the night of each concert are dismissed as part of the tour's viral marketing campaign. Stories of strange behaviour on the tour bus and in the band's hotel rooms surface briefly in entertainment news.
BRIEF BACKSTORY: a damaged ship bearing a Cybercontroller and a few Cybermen crashes on Earth in the wake of the Time War. By chance, they capture one of the band members, who is on a wilderness vacation after the last tour. Being greatly weakened in the wake of the crash, the Cybercontroller absorbs the band member's knowledge and decides on a "subtle" approach to restore the ranks of its army. It plans to plant a seed force in many major cities of the developed world, using the tour as a cover.
The Cybercontroller travels with the band, housed in a large transport truck. Perhaps if the PCs can find and destroy it before it launches the final phase of its plan, the world can be saved.
