I've been talking this over with some of my players and I was looking for opinions from the rest of the community. While the current campaign is starting to get back on track I've been planning the next one (at least at the idea stage now). The reason why I'm here now is that I wanted the characters in the campaign to be a bit more powerful than those typically offered by the base rules. I was looking for something comparable to the 7th Doctor's companions, most of the 10th Doctor's companions and finally the pre-generated stats for the Doctor himself. The idea I had was have 42 character points and the same 18 skill points with most characters splitting that into 9 extra character points and 9 extra skill points (or weighing those points more in skills as the case my be).
For the sake of game balance I was looking to ban traits like experienced and inexperienced as while they work in the normal rules they can be either close to useless or incredibly overpowered (as someone with all these extra points can buy a load of copies of the inexperienced trait and get loads and loads of story points from it).
I'm also planning to revise and add some traits (particularly from the other vortex system books) but that's a subject for another day. What I want to know is if this is a good idea and especially considering my group are not rabid power gamers I trust them not to go crazy with it?

If all you're doing is giving characters more attribute and skill points, why not? They'll be able to overcome higher difficulties on their rolls and take more damage. If everyone gets the same boost, and if the challenges they're faced with are suitably improved, I see no reason not to do this.

Personally, and not knowing your players, I don't see why not. Other points based RPG systems (e.g. GURPS) allow for various power levels by granting different budgets for character construction.

I would be tempted to limit the number of iterations of Experienced/Inexperienced, rather than outright ban, but ymmv. Other than that, give it a go and if it works well, let us know.
