BBC article.
The find is fascinating, though a few websites are rather hyperbolic about it. The Bruniquel Cave in south-west France was discovered accidentally in 1990 but recent examinations have found evidence of stone rings, built from hundreds of broken off stalagmites, there that date back perhaps 175,000 years. The stalagmites had been chopped to similar lengths and laid out in two oval patterns about 40cm high. There are also signs of fires in the cave complex. It's likely that the caves were a refuge or possibly a 'ritual site'.
