A trio of articles from that BBC website that might be of interest.
Gold under London's streets. Link
Covers the vaults under the city (and environs) holding about a quarter-trillion dollars of gold (depending on the price), weighing more than 6,250 tonnes. About 5,000 tonnes of it is in the eight Bank of England vaults under the Threadneedle Street area.
Gaming possibilities
1. Would the Cybermen be interested in neutralising such a stockpile? How? A Goldfinger (film) style irradiation perhaps.
2. Stealing it. But how? Could someone be planning to use alien tech to shift that metal? Or are the PCs called in after a few tonnes disappears mysteriously...
3. Is gold all that's kept in the vaults? Perhaps someone trying to steal the metal finds a UNIT/Torchwood storeroom for alien artefacts.
Rudyard Lake - The Geneva of England Link
Or the Blackpool of the Potteries, given that it's located in rural Staffordshire. Once a hugely popular holiday location, now far less so.
Nice pictures that captures something of the atmosphere of the period. And yes, Kipling is named for the lake.
Gaming possibilities.
1. For a historic or pseudo-historic scenario it's a fascinating location.
2. The lake is an artificial construct constructed by John Rennie to feed the Caldon Canal. What might have been unearthed during the work?
3. Or was it constructed to provide a home for something large and aquatic? Is there a Skarsen or Zygon ship lurking in the 66 hectares of water?
Aircraft and shipwrecks of Scotland Link
A look at the recent survey of Scottish wrecks.
Gaming possibilities.
1. Sunken ships and wrecked aircraft, but what caused their losses?
2. Attempts to explore or salvage the wrecks might disturb something best left alone, or unearth something really dangerous.
3. What's the real reason for the project? Are the government looking for a specific wreck, searching for Earth Reptile hibernation pods or surveying for Zygon settlements?
