A bit of a case of the whole being more than the sum of its parts. I really enjoyed the overall story of the episode but a lot of the individual scenes seemed very poorly written. The whole joke-telling at the gallows bit was particularly cringy. Really liked Me as a character though and am really looking forward to seeing where this hybrid story goes.

Overall an excellent episode but let down by silly bits.

Actually, a funny observation I made during the opening credits is that the writer was called Catherine Tregenna, which is an anagram of "Hint Can Regenerate". Thought maybe it was Steven Moffat using a clever pen name to give us hints of things to come, but after googling it she's apparently a real person who writes for loads of different shows and it's just a ridiculous coincidence.

It was great, really - I would even have rated it "Fantastic" if not for the annoying anachronisms, such as the very 19th century-looking clock or the blatantly 18th century highwaymen costumes, complete with three-pointed hats - are we supposed to be in 1651 or 1751 ? I know that, just like last time's horned helmets (ah! another case of anachronistic headwear!) these are only cosmetic details and that DW is entertainment, not historical reenactment but I really feel such things actually "get in the way" of entertainment, for those of us who are able to tell one century from another. It was especially puzzling since the story could simply have been set 100 years later - just remove the date and the minor references to the forthcoming Great Fire of 1666 or to Oliver Cromwell; unless I've missed something, there was no particular reason to set the story in the 1650s rather than in the 1750s...

Sorry to be the voice of dissent, but for me it was the weakest story of this series so far. I just don't find Ashildr to be an engaging or sympathetic character, and I think a lot of that is down to Maisie Williams' performance being so flat. Also, the voice thing at the beginning was ridiculous - in fact, the whole of the pre-credits scene was wasted because we all knew who the Nightmare was going to turn out to be, because of all the pre-publicity.
However, I did enjoy Rufus Hound as Sam Swift, particularly as he was trying to eke out a few more precious minutes of life on the gallows. Yes, many of the jokes were hoary, but he was a desperate man using whatever he could to delay the inevitable.
Unfortunately, I don't think this will be an episode I'll go back to very often. But despite that, it was still head and shoulders above the weakest of last year's stories.

Sorry to be the voice of dissent, but for me it was the weakest story of this series so far. Genuinely agree. It was an odd episode, and for me the high point was the similarity between what Ashildr was experiencing and how it relates to the Doctor's own existence and the scenes where they both examined this. Clara's selfie at Coal Hill school with Ashildr in the background might be related to the new spin-off series: www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/doctorwho/entries/953c5b1f-3cc8-4db9-8184-f1b6567260f1 (could Maisey be part of the cast?)

An enjoyable episode.
I actually was put off by Clara's absence, but I guess the reveal of why the Doctor doesn't travel with other immortals would be more obvious if an ordinary human were part of those conversations.
Even Romana was a very young and inexperienced Gallifreyan when she traveled with the Doctor. There to provide the wide eyed wonder and exuberance he needs.

And the Doctor himself was a callow youth of a mere 750 back then, not much more than a third of his current estimate.

Apparently Ashildr will return in episode 10 (Face The Raven) along with Rigsy. Will this be Clara's finale?

I didn't understand Ashildr's change of heart. She was perfectly fine with murdering someone to make her gadget work; why does she suddenly develop a conscience when she's betrayed?
The Doctor sympathizing with her agony about being long-lived was a bit too heavy-handed; we've been down this road a lot in his previous incarnation. I found it more interesting that he didn't offer her his feelings on this; he waited for her to ask.
The lack of Clara was most refreshing.
I was disappointed, and a little surprised, that the cat-guy wasn't a Tharil.
