I was inspired by a discussion a friend of mine and I had on this topic.
I have limited it to the revived series companions.

Easy: Donna and Amy.
I wasn't a fan of Catherine Tate before her appearance on Doctor Who, and to be honest I wasn't taken with Donna in The Runaway Bride. So, when it was announced she would be the Doctor's companion for Series 3, I wasn't impressed. But her story arc and character development were superb and really won me over - and such a tragic farewell.
Amy, on the other hand, is such great fun and had an excellent dynamic with the Doctor and Rory.
Can I add an honourable mention for Wilf?

I'm glad to see that Donna has broken out to a nice lead. One of the comments I had seen somewhere online that lead to this question had claimed that she was not generally well thought of.
She is pretty much my favorite companion.

She is pretty much my favorite companion. I've encountered a similar phenomenon before. My theory is people vote whatever their opinion, but are for some reason more likely to comment if they're haters. it doesn't apply in every case but can result in those who go by comment threads alone getting a very inaccurate opinion of the general feeling of the community as a whole. |

I've not really noticed this - is she a Marmite companion, perhaps? But Donna fans rejoice! She's returning next year in a set of 10th Doctor Adventures from Big Finish! |

Very surprised to see Martha coming in second here - I always feel like she's the forgotten companion (of the "big names" - Rose, Martha, Donna, Amy, Clara).
By the way, I've just noticed that Captain Jack is missing from the voting options. Would he have stolen a vote or two from the others, I wonder?

Captian Jack was left off the poll intentionaly. I felt he was popular enough to dominate unfairly. Which is why there is no Sarah Jane either. Also, even though he did travel in the TARDIS a couple of times I never thought of him as a 'companion', I don't know why. It is a counterpoint that I can count Wilf and Craig as companions though. My brain is wierd. I'd love to see a poll of classic series companions, too! That would be a very long list. |
