I'm not sure I'm the target audience for a "Young Adult" series, but I'll certainly give it a go - after all, I wasn't really the target audience for The Sarah Jane Adventures!
The announcement mentions "all new villains and monsters", but I can't see the BBC launching a Doctor Who spin-off in which the only connection is the name of the school. So I'm also wondering if this will feature Clara.
Guest appearance by Ian Chesterton as a school governor or some such, anyone?

So I'm also wondering if this will feature Clara. Well the K-9 show didn't have much connection to the mainstream Whoniverse, they may be going that way with this one too. Hopefully they'll include some continuity with the history of the area and it's previous appearances on the series too.
Guest appearance by Ian Chesterton as a school governor or some such, anyone? That would be good, though William Russell has turned 90.

Apparently, Patrick Ness (who's writing this) has already tweeted that Clara will not feature. Ah well. But I still think they'll need a stronger tie to the parent series than just the name of the school. After all, K9 is famous enough in his own right to support a spin-off. Coal Hill? Not really - they may as well just create a series without any connections whatsoever unless there are other links.

I won't be making any judgements on this until I've seen several episodes. The 'Young Adult' target audience approach may be interesting.

I'll probably give it a try, though I'm not optimistic. It seems to be a nearly direct replacement for The Sarah Jane Adventures. I think it's aimed at a slightly older audience than SJA was - a BBC Three broadcast would seem to indicate late teens rather than the age range of CBBC's usual audience. So it will hopefully provide a different enough angle to be interesting in its own right, rather than being just an SJA clone.

Though it assumes BBC3 has a future.... I'm a little more optimistic.
Though the title ('Class') is still kinda silly to my mind.

"Aimed at children" but "dark and sexy"? The "British Buffy"? Made by Deux-Ex-Machina Moffat? No way.

BBC Three is definitely not a children's channel. It's aimed at "young adults" rather than children, which from the channel's output is generally late teens/twenties.

Here's some blurb from the full press release: Time has looked at your faces now. And time never forgets… What if your planet was massacred and you were the sole survivor? What if a legendary figure out of space and time found you a place to hide? But what if the things that want to kill you have tracked you down? And worst of all, what if you haven't studied for your A-Levels…?
Like all sixth formers, these four Coal Hill School students have hidden secrets and desires. They are facing their own worst fears, navigating a life of friends, parents, school work, sex, sorrow - and possibly the end of existence.
Coal Hill School has been a part of the Doctor Who Universe since the very first episode, but that has come at a price. All the time-travelling over the years has caused the very walls of space and time to become thin. There’s something pressing in on the other side, something waiting for its chance to kill everyone and everything, to bring us all into Shadow.
Fear is coming, tragedy is coming, war is coming. Prepare yourselves, Class is coming. There are also some additional cast photos: Comingsoon.net

There's even a wiki page for the series now.
Topically the school is now an Academy...
