I was musing this evening on alternates to the canon Doctor Who series, and their potential for gaming. I'm dabbling in this myself with the Evil Doctor thread (and buried in my 'Seeds & Notes' file is some stuff for a darker version of the canon Whoniverse which might get written up someday) but I'm not the only one dissatisfied with the version that saw broadcast. Hell, even Big Finish has tried it, with the Doctor Who Unbound audioplays. And it integrated my twice interests of Doctor Who and Alternate History nicely. So here is some material that might inspire. Or horrify. 1. An Alternate History of Doctor WhoLink. Pretty much what it says, this re-imagining sees Sydney Newman move to the USA and create Doctor Who for the US NET television network. Not a great deal of detail but I like the idea of Nathan Fillion as the Doctor. Oh and Firefly was revived too. 2. Who could've been Who? Link. A look at the actors who almost made it to the role. 3. The Yankee DoctorLink. What if NET had licensed Doctor Who in 1964, as an educational TV programme in the spirit of the BBC original? This re-imagining has two parallel series of Doctor Who, UK and US, with a variety of different actors in the role (including Darren McGavin, Bernard Cribbens, Robin Williams, Ron Moody and Ross Martin) plus some interesting companion roles. This also triggers some changes in pop culture and science fiction in general (including ST-TNG been cancelled early, Ghostbusters becoming a successful TV series and ST-Voyager being good). Gaming wise this is very content rich, plenty of adventure ideas from the write-ups and characters. Statting up some them would be an interest project for someone... 4. Nelvana's Doctor Who.Link. What if the Toronto based animation company Nelvana Productions had gotten a license to produce an animated version of Doctor Who? DValdron has some ideas how Who would have progressed without the limitations of 1970's special effects budgets. 5. Who's The Doctor?Link. Another AH.com poster, ADv, imagines what the series would have been like if Tom Baker stormed off after The Armageddon Factor. Once you get past the casting of J ohn D enver it gets interesting. 6. The Other 11 Doctors.Link. Well thereviewer is working on something like this, but over at scifind Alasdair Stuart has a version of Who where the role was always played by a woman. Personally I think that Margaret Rutherford would make a better First Doctor though. But Sue Perkins is an excellent choice, even if her relationship with Rose would probably have been huge tabloid fodder in the UK. 7. The Ribos Divergence - an Alternate Fifth DoctorLink. Another Tom Baker quits early concept, this time at the beginning of the Key to Tim arc, where he's replaced by Richard Griffiths. Brief and moribund. So, any comments?

Personally I think that Margaret Rutherford would make a better First Doctor though. But Sue Perkins is an excellent choice, even if her relationship with Rose would probably have been huge tabloid fodder in the UK. Actually, the link here is part of where I got the idea for the universe where The Doctor is played by a woman. Additionally, on facebook there is a group called The British Invaders which I am a part of where they have not only the summaries for the alternate Doctors, but also a list of who would've played the genderswap companions right up until Amy and Rory, which I have also used as inspiration.
I also spoke to other people on the form for inspiration and while I did think Miranda Hart would've made a good female 11, Craig Oxbrow showed me a photo of actress Jamie Winstone and I truly believe she has the better resembelance to Matt Smith in the photo. Here is the link if you want to see it:http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&jsonp=vglnk_14206744476216&key=bbb516d91daee20498798694a42dd559&libId=e88c4e51-61f0-44ff-b7c6-5f71aeb8eb3a&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fdwaitas.proboards.com%2Fthread%2F2567%2Fdoctor-campaign-scenarios-idea-help&v=1&out=http%3A%2F%2Fi19.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb175%2Fcraigoxbrow%2FJaimeWinstone.jpg&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fdwaitas.proboards.com%2Fsearch%2Fresults%3Fwhat_at_least_one%3DJamie%2BWinstone%26when_between_start%3D2007-11-01%26when_between_end%3D2015-05-31%26who_only_made_by%3D0%26display_as%3D0&title=%5BDoctor%20Who%5D%20Campaign%20Scenarios%20Idea%20Help%20%7C%20Doctor%20Who%3A%20Adventures%20in%20Time%20%26%20Space&txt=Jaime%20Winstone
Giving a bit of a sneak-preview into the future of my female Doctor universe, Craig also suggested to me having Simon Pegg play Donald "Donny" Noble in that universe while Catherine Tate played The Editor in that universe's version of The Long Game. (Seriously just imagine Catherine Tate during the scene where the Jagrafess, and then imagine Simon Pegg arriving inside the Female Tenth Doctor's TARDIS at the end of Doomsday.)
Finally, I already mentioned this in my RPG's prologue (and don't worry. THIS year the game is coming now I can say with certainty it'll be out sometime mid-to late this year,) but in case anybody missed it, my roommate suggested the perfect choice for the female War Doctor; Maggie Smith.

Here's another alternate Doctor Who, also produced in the USA. Might be a few useful ideas, especially if you planned a major reboot of the Whoniverse.

Here's some fun merchandise along this theme. Artist Colin Brockhurst has produced some fake documents in which the role of the Doctor was played by actors who were considered but didn't quite get the part: Changing the Face of Doctor WhoFirst Doctor - Geoffrey Bayldon Second Doctor - Brian Blessed Third Doctor - Ron Moody Fourth Doctor - Graham Crowden Fifth Doctor - Richard Griffiths Sixth Doctor - Richard O'Brien Seventh Doctor - Ken Campbell Eighth Doctor - Rik Mayall Plus Peter Cushing as the Master, David Langton as the Brigadier and Yutte Stensgaard as Jo Grant. You can get a closer look at all of these on Colin's website, via the above link.

Pure gold. Colin must have gone 'cross-time' to get those in his TARDIS. It really makes a huge difference to the believability of those actors being in that role. The Brian Blessed and Ron Moody mockups are my favorites. Certainly a more physically vibrant Brian Blessed and perhaps a sweeter-tempered but marginally sinister Ron Moody would have been very different but equally as exciting as the originals, and I say this as a lifelong Third Doctor fan.
Looking again at that splash page...it's a bit eerie...

Inspired by misterharry's posting of one of Paul Hanley artworks, here's more of his work.
In a slightly alternate universe where the show wasn't cancelled in 1989, and Sylvester McCoy continued in the role until Lungbarrow in 1996, the Eighth Doctor was played byRobbie Coltrane (just out of Cracker). When Coltrane decided to leave after four seasons in the role (regenerating in The Ancestor Cell of 2000) he was followed by Bill Nighy, who stayed in the role from The Burning until 2004's The Gallifrey Chronicles. With the producers wanting a younger Tenth Doctor, Dominic Monaghan was cast to replace him, playing the role for another twelve years. Perhaps the most controversial choice was his replacement, in 2008, by Jaime Murray who became the first female incarnation of the Doctor, holding the part until the seminal 50th Anniversary Special in 2013. The Twelfth Doctor, played by Ruth Wilson, promises to be a more dangerous and alien interpretation of the character. Especially with the promised return of the Master, played by Peter Capaldi...

In a similar vein as Paul Hanley's montage of 8th Doctor companions, here's his superb The Infinite Doctor: How many can you name (either actor or source will do)? To help, here's the numbered version: Now, the answers to this one can fairly readily be found online - so no cheating! But be warned, some of these are pretty obscure.

I'm a great fan of Paul Hanley's work, and his Infinite Doctors is a particularly wonderful piece.
I believe the man at number 52 needs no introduction!

In my "Lady Penelope's Odyssey" campaign, I chose to "go alternate" after the 10th Doctor (for various reasons, including the freedom this choice gave me in terms of plots, mysteries etc.).
Our 11th Doctor had the face of Paterson Joseph (we used stills from the Aeon / Flux movie AND the Neverwhere TV series - just couldn't resist the "marquis de Carabas" look).
Our 12th Doctor had the face of Kenneth Branagh.
And our current, 13th, ultimate (?) Doctor has the same face as his 8th incarnation (Paul McGann) - because of the special circumstances surrounding his last, "extra" regeneration (to make a long story short : he was dying, with no regeneration left, and our Time Lady heroine decided to sacrifice one of her remaining regenerations to save him - un a very dramatic scene). And since her first encounter (and dearest memories) with him occurred in his 8th regeneration, she unconsciously gave him back the face of "her" Doctor. BTW Paul McGann hadn't done the Big Finish audios with his new look nor made the "Night of the Doctor" minisode when we first used the 8th Doctor (who had his classic full Byronic look) - when the whole 13th incarnation sacrifice / rebirth thing came up, we decided to use the Big Finish "new look" for this final incarnation, thereby making this "new 8th Doctor" quite different.

Not quite Alternate Doctors but there's an AH thread about the British Prime Ministers in the Whoniverse that might be of interest. Governing With Aliens

Reminds me of the article someone did a while back about if Doctor Who had been an American show. Someone asked who the various Masters should be, and I had my answer ready. Appending it to add Missy. (Skipping Beevers and Pratt because anyone could be under that makeup.)
Delgado: Patrick McGoohan (Born in New York.)
Ainley: David Ogden Stiers
Jacobi: Kirk Douglas
Simm: Aaron Paul (Here come the drums, bitches!)
Gomez: Judy Greer (The woman can play crazy.)

I had this idea of what I called the 6(b) Doctors. The War Doctor was the 9th incarnation of the Doctor, but a product of season 6(b) going on much longer than anyone knew and creating an alternate timeline. The Time War was already heating up when they put the Second Doctor into their service. He remained a soldier in the Time War for multiple incarnations, leading up to the 9th Doctor creating some method of undoing all of that time and causing the destruction of Galifrey in the process. Time was reset, and the Third Doctor we all know came into existence.

I was in a campaign where the entire universe was rebooted, including The Doctor and Missy. The Doctor came back as David Warner, and later regenerated into some anonymous stock photo model - but could have been played by Jim Carey with his hair dyed red. Yep, The Doctor was finally ginger!
