Here's a little something I put together from the data in my website...
THE HISTORY OF THE ETERNAL WAR (aka the Vampire Wars)
In the space beneath space is a "dark universe" made up of the extra-continuual alter-matter state of the Vortex’s Under-History. In this universe are the Elder Gods known as the Yssgaroth. These are the Lords of Time of the dark universe. The civilizations on that side are very different from those in Normal Space, but like ourselves, they believe that monsters exist outside their space. The idea of a breach between the universes fills them with fear.
Forty-four years before the creation of the Eye of Harmony, Rassilon decided to harness a singularity as a power source for Gallifreyan time travel. Despite not having developed a stellar manipulator, Rassilon and Omega took a fleet of hundreds of Starkillers and tested his theory by exploding a device within a yellow star. The star collapses into a singularity (not a Black Hole as Rassilon has yet to invent event horizons). This punched a hole in the Space-Time that served as a foundation for the star, and makes a dent in the space-time continuum. This dent creates a gap in history itself and opens dimensional holes throughout the galaxy.
Vast tracks of the dark universe are devastated and thousands of Yssgaroth, or Great Vampires as they are more commonly know, enter Normal Space. They swarmed across what would later be known as the Spiral Politic. Few of Starkillers survive the first attack and Rassilon would later ensures that nobody knew that it was his experiment that released the Yssgaroth.
The Yssgaroth can take any form in this universe but most appear as the Great Vampires (aka Giant Vampires) which are hundreds of feet tall. They had incredibly efficient cardiovascular systems and could transmute almost any energy directed at them. The Yssgaroth feed on the blood and souls making them an anathema to all forms of life and meaning. Just standing within a few meters of a Yssgaroth will drain even a Gallifreyan's life force. A single one could drain all life from a planet. If a Time Lord was to venture into the dark universe they would drain the life force of the Yssgaroth in much the same manner. Their symbols include a bloody thorn bush overrunning a planet, a bleeding, eyeless lamb on a divine throne, and a skin of desperate devouring faces. They specialized in pain and were known for torturing to death the inhabitants of entire planets - sometimes stretching their (still living) victim's nervous systems out over several kilometers.
Since the Yssgaroth were Time Lords (ie history incarnate) of the "dark universe" they contaminate this universe's life and history simply by interacting with this universe's Time Lords. The Yssgaroth are so alien to the Gallifreyan views that their mere observations threaten Gallifreyan life. This contamination takes the form of the V-Factor which infects all life that comes in contact with, making it immortal provided it has the life-force of blood to feed on. Pure Children of the Yssgaroth (those sired directly by a Great Vampire), never tire, never hunger and they never feel pain. These vampires are servants of the Yssgaroth and the are responsible for killing trillions. Their only (apparent) ambition is to cause pain and despair and they spread across the spiral politic, enslaving and destroying whole star systems. Unlike species infected with the V-Factor the bodies of Great Vampires do not crumble to dust upon death.
Eleven years after the release of the Vampire Hoard, Rassilon, the Other, Lord Dowtroyal, General Gimel and the rest of Neo-Technologists started the Intuitive Revolution and overthrow the Pythia. But Rassilon’s victory is made in the shadow of a much greater threat.
Two years after taking control, the public of Gallifrey discovered the full extent of the Vampire’s threat. The Time Lords declared war on these beings. The War was organized by Rassilon's personal guard (who will later become the CIA). It was during this war that General Mirraflex became famous. He later founded the House of Mirraflex. Possibly fearing the eventual War in Heaven, Grandfather Mirraflex structures the House into an esoteric martial lodge.
As part of the first Vampire War, Omega, Rassilon, and the Other created Validium as the Ultimate Defense for Gallifrey. Validium is a very flexible and elastic living metal with DNA, that becomes sentient when it achieves critical mass (probably about 300 kg). It can read people’s intentions and actions like a book and can choose protectors. Its soul function is to cause destruction, however it is capable of shaping planets and can probably travel through time. The metal itself is no more ridged per volume then most types of cloth. Validium influences peoples subconscious actions and generates an aura of chaos that causes violence and destruction on any world it passes near. It can shape itself into whatever its owner asks it to be. Validium is used to create the Cold - A substance that exists as a liquid gateway/buffer between the Normal Space and the Yssgaroth-Space of the Vampires.
After years of work, Rassilon claims to have designed the Omniscate, that will become know the Great Seal of Rassilon. Despite his claims, some believe that the Seal predates the Eye of Harmony by thousands of years. It symbolizes infinity and eternity. Part of the Omniscate is a stylized version of an Ouroboros (i.e. a garter eating its own tale) twisted into an infinity symbol. There is an algorithm imprinted in the atomic structure that can be used to decode Rassilon's cipher. This symbol has a negative effect on the neurosystems of the Yssgaroth. Future generations will regard the Seal of Rassilon as a symbol that wards off evil. The Time Lords use the Omniscate to decorate rooms with great power.
A more effective weapon in the War was the Bow Ships. Again Rassilon might have taken credit for the invention. The steel projectiles launched a Vampires are called Bowspikes. Rassilon ordered the construction of 700 Bow Ships to destroy the Vampires. The Bow Ships were crewed by 16,000 Prydonians and Arcalians. The fleets were led by General Kopyion Liall a Mahajetsu, Lord Defender of the Faith of the Peoples of Gallifrey. These ships turned the tide of the Vampire War. Mahajetsu would suffer hideous wounds during the War, including the loss of his arm.
At the height of the Eternal Wars, the Patrex Chapter (with the help of Lord Rassilon) developed sub-matter block-transfer drones called N-Forms to fight the Vampires. Each N-Form was three times the size of the city of London, but most of this mass exists in pocket dimensions. They were anchored into N-Space via carrier molecules, and these carrier molecules are scattered throughout the Cosmos. The N-forms are remotely controlled from Gallifrey but their intelligence can be raised to near sentience. They usually remain dormant until they detect a V-Stet (Vampiric Waveform caused by the V-Factor). When activated they burst through the carrier molecule via a dimensional rent and take on a metallic form. They can take on any shape and can use dimensional shifts to teleport themselves. An activated N-Form will home in on the Vampire brain-wave patterns and exterminate any species that has a trace of contamination. It will also destroy and planets which show signs of the V-Factor. Despite protests from the Prydonians and Arcalians,N-forms are secretly used against the Vampires and helps with the Bow ships' victories.
Having deployed Validium as a defense for Gallifrey, Rassilon and Omega sealed all the dimensional holes that had allowed the Yssgaroth to enter N-Space. Forced-matter shells are constructed around the node points. These shells were designed to look like planets on the outside. The Gallifreyans continued to monitor these planets incase the shells should be breached. By this point the Great Vampires numbers are reduced to a mere thousand.
Twenty years after the releases of the Vampire Horde, the first Vampire War finally came to an end at the Battle of Cassiopeia. Rassilon deceived the Vampire King into believing that he is an ally of the Yssgaroth. He then tricked the King into falling out of space and time. Rassilon returned to Gallifrey and was hailed as a hero. By this point in the Eternal War, only 34 Bowships and 1200 crewmembers still survive.
In order to protect Gallifrey from the children to the Yssgaroth, the solar engineer, Omega, constructed a new second sun, which he added to Gallifrey's system. This Second Sun was named Pogar and its Minyan designation is Gamma Kasterborous B. Pogar is a main sequence class M star. However, because of its artificial origin, Gallifrey is often described as having only one sun. On Gallifrey the second sun of Pogar can be seen to rise in the south. These twin suns that Gallifrey orbits the planet has very short nights.
But the V-factor still had a part to play in Gallifrey’s biology. Only a few months after the end of the First Vampire War, the Legacy of Rassilon (aka the Immortality Virus) is perfected by the Biosynthesist Thremix in secret. Rassilon is quite obsessed in the possibility of immortality and funds Thremix's experiments. This virus, gives those who are infected with it the power of Regeneration and would help extend the already amazing Gallifreyan lifespan. The Legacy of Rassilon creates self-replicating biogenic molecules that work ceaselessly to repair and prune damaged and malformed cells. If the body is subjected to great stress, the permanently carried self-replicated biogenic molecules rebuild the body cell by cell causing a complete Regeneration of the body (and to a lesser degree) the mind. The regenerative capabilities of a Vampire and the Immortality Virus are almost identical. Many historians suspect that Immortality Virus might have been derived from the V-Factor. And it is an undeniable fact that Time Lords share 98% of their genes with Vampires.
Official Time Lord history claims that no Time Lord was ever infected with the V-Factor. Unfortunately Rassilon’s efforts to trick the Vampire King left rumors that Rassilon himself might have allowed himself to become a Vampire. Rumors that half of the High Council believed, and it was this that led Jelen to attempt a coup to remove Rassilon from power. While the coup failed, the rumors would persists, and in the modern era it is still possible to find some Gallifreyans who worship Rassilon the Vampire.
Unfortunately, while the Vampire King was severely wounded he still managed to escape into the Exo-Space Universe. The King managed to send his children back into Normal Space to infect others with the V-Factor.
Twenty years after the end of the first Vampire War, Rassilon anchored the Eye of Harmony on Gallifrey, creating a Universe of positive time. That very day the Vampires made their first attack on Gallifrey. While the attack was repelled, they did manage to destroy some of the machinery used to create the Eye of Harmony. This left an impossibly massive empty space sitting under the Panoptican with only the Eye of Harmony itself at the center of the void. This void becomes known as the Caldera.
This assault was the start of the Second Vampire War. Realizing that the Vampire threat was far from over, Rassilon decreed that all future TARDISs would carry a Psycho-Telmeter which would allow them to track vampires through space and time based only on a blood sample. The Time Lords allied with the Fledgling Empires. Together they combated the Great Old Ones, including the Racnoss, the Vampires, and the Nestenes. This continuing conflict would eventually become known as the Eternal War in Heaven.
The Vampire Wars waxed and waned for centuries. During that time the Time Lords destroy the Baobhan Sith vampires, and imprisoned numerous Vampires in the Death Zone for their own entertainment. They even developed Anti-Vampire Antibodies that protected a Gallifreyan from being infected by the V-factor. These antibodies became standard issue in all future TARDISes. 469 years after the anchoring of the Eye of Harmony, Rassilon discovered a peaceful Yssgaroth colony which fed only on non-sapient beings. These colonists had taken humanoid forms in an attempt to escape, but, upon finding them, Rassilon destroyed the colony with bowships. This is the beginning of yet another Vampire War.
By this point Bow Ships were being transported in Type 12 War TARDISes. These timestations were the size of a comet and were filled with corridors, rooms and Bow Ship bays. The timestation itself had no actual offensive function and served only to deliver the Bow Ships to the correct time zone. One of these carriers is invaded by a Great Vampire and breaks down in the Agamemnon System. Its left abandoned and is mistaken for a planet by the lesser species.
To ensure that no occurrence of the V-Factor goes undetected, the Time Lords create mountain and moon sized receivers that are placed on nexus points of the psi ley lines that are sacattered throughout the Universe. They function as a Distant Early Warning Lines that will notify Gallifrey if any irrational entities (like the Great Vampires) become active. One of these receivers is placed in orbit of Saturn and another on the moon of Iphigenia.
Rassilon began developing a new Gallifreyan Warship that used the Cold (a liquid gateway to the dark universe). It was a weapon of mutual assured destruction that could dump entire planets into the dark universe of the Yssgaroth. The Prototype is about 7,000 km in diameter and is shaped like the Seal of Rassilon.
While the end of the Eternal War would prevent the warship from ever going into production, the Supreme Council on Gallifrey was growing wary of Rassilon’s power. One thousand years after the beginning of the first Vampire War, it was discovered that a senior members in the Arcalian Chapter House, Lady Ouida, had been a Vampire for centuries. While Ouida was killed, several Time Lords, who had been infected with the V-Factor, fled Gallifrey and settled on the nexus world of Earth. They became known as the Mal’akh and founded of the terran vampires.
Officially the Time Lords disavowed all knowledge of the Yssgaroth activities on Earth, but they secretly sent representatives of the five most active Houses of Gallifrey to create the five Grand Families on Earth in the 12th century. These five Grand Families are the Cecils, the Greys, the Howards/Arundels, the Percys, and the Stanleys. These families monitored and limit Yssgaroth activity there.
After over a thousand years of battle, the Eternal War is finally won by the Time Lords with the secret help of the Patrexian N-Forms. All the Giant Vampires had been killed (except the King Vampire, who had escaped some time ago). This marked the end of the Vampire Wars and the end of the Time of Chaos. By this point, dozens of worlds had been destoryed by the Time Lords or the Vampires.
It was then that Rassilon made his move. A communicable version of the Immortality Virus (regeneration) had been created, and Rassilon released it on Gallifrey. 5% of the population gain the benefits of regeneration which, becomes known as the Legacy of Rassilon. However the virus also killed about 10% of the planet’s population. It was arranged that all Gallifreyan warriors who knew the truth about the Vampire Wars perished in this plauge. The sole exception was General Liall a Mahajetsu. The Time Lords secretly used D-Mat technology to retro-annul all the worlds that were infected by the V-Factor. Rassilon also ensured that the Matrix contained no records about the Eternal Wars. The Caldera of the Eye of Harmony is the only officially remaining proof of the Eternal Wars.
While the role of the N-forms in the conflict was quickly forgotten, Rassilon was hailed as the Conquer of Yassgaroth. Vampire myths now existed on almost every inhabited planet - most claiming that Vampires are vulnerable to sunlight, running water, and certain herbs. The Minyans and several other Time Aware races thanked Rassilon for defeating the Vampires.
Sickened by the loss of life in the Vampire War the Gallifreyans renounced violence forever. Article 7 was added to the Gallifreyan Constitution forbidding genocide. The weapons of the Eternal War are stored in a series of time vaults hundreds of kilometers beneath the surface of Gallifrey called the Slaughter House. The N-Forms' intelligences are downloaded back to Gallifrey and the N-Forms are abandoned.
Others were not so sure. General Mahajetsu fabricated a planet for himself and prepared for the return of the Yssgaroth. And even Rassilon ordered that the Record of Rassilon be created and installed on all TT Capsules, starting with the Type 18. This collection of magnetic cards contain the official history of the Great Vampire Wars. By inserting them into a slot on the console will produce a continuous scroll of paper with the information printed on it. It says (in part) that the Vampires are "the enemy of our people, and of all
living things." It charges all Time Lords with the Directive of Rassilon: the task of destroying any Great Vampire or its decendents - even at the cost of his own life. The Record of Rassilon also included info on other ancient menaces to the Time Lords. The Record would be installed in all models of TARDIS until shortly after the release of the Type 40.
With the Eternal War being complete the anchoring of the Web of Time, which had begun with the creation of the Eye of Harmony, was finally able to be completed. Realizing that the Eternal Wars were caused by reckless research into time travel, Rassilon decided that too much advancement is dangerous. He had limits placed on the speed of Gallifreys technological growth.
In the modern era, the Vampires and the Eternal War are considered to be a myth.
While Cats are a symbol of intelligence in Gallifreyan culture, and the Owl is the symbol of Rassilon, the symbol of the Bat remains prevalent in Gallifreyan mythology. The museums of Ancient Times have are impressive displays of the worlds that legends claim were once controlled by the Great Vampires, but everything is described as being part of an ancient mythology that has no basis in fact.
Even though almost all evidence of the Eternal War has been removed from history some groups (like the Eremites and the House of Redlooms) will continue to tell legends of Vampires down through the generations. Timetots often share stories in the nurseries of Gallifrey about the Great Vampires. Buried deep underground are fallout shelters and Catacombs whose total length (if arranged end to end) would exceed the diamater of Gallifrey. Hidden in the lower levels are cisterns and a shrines dedicated to the cult of Rassilon the Vampire. While some cults worship Rassilon the Vampire, most Time Lords find the idea of Vampires in the Capitol to be a particularly horrific thought.
