Ah, I remember that module. Excellent worldbuilding, shame about the lack of plot and actual scenario. Did Riddell pick up a Trellwand?
No Trellwands for Riddell, I'm afraid, no! He had an extra trick up his sleeve (quite literally) as things stood... but that's a story for another day that will, I'm sure, play out in a near future scenario. I felt the same way about the module, actually—there's an almost overwhelming amount of background material but some significant gaps in the content aside from that. It actually worked out quite well in this instance, though, as between a prologue built onto the front of the adventure, a regeneration to build towards and the return of an old companion in the mix, there was plenty going on and more than enough for me to juggle as the GM! Sounds like fun.
Yeah the module was interesting but the background (while excellent) took so much of the 48 pages that it swamped out the actual plot, making the scenario almost non-existent. It might have been better as a Ringworld style setting. The characters were OK too, though having Joan of Arc as a companion seemed rather odd.

When this module showed up in the Destiny of the Time Lords campaign we decided that Destiny's black hole would be perfect for re-building a new Eye of Harmony. We teamed up with Supreme and made friends with the Captain-Lords to create the new Lords of Time [our game was set shortly after the end of the Time War]. Destiny because our player's home base where they return after each story. And we've had lots of adventures on Destiny as we became the Time Lords of Destiny. Fended off invasions by the Mara, the Tractors, Vampires, West-World style androids, Faction Paradox, and lots of local social unrest movements [two of which came from Destiny's distant future!]

I can see how it fit with the campaign. And what a brilliant group of baddies, from West World androids to political dissidents of the future! (I'm itching to make use of the Mara in our campaign.)

Its been a hell of a time. They stole a copy of the Matrix from Drathro on Ravolox and uploaded it into Supreme [well it was more like uploading Supreme into the Matrix!] Recently they used the black hole to anchor the Web of Time, signed a temporal accord with Sabbath and the Council of 8, made peace with the Vampires, and enrolled the first class of future Time Lords into an Academy.

Jeremy Brett - great choice!

Fantastic choice. Jeremy is in my opinion the definitive Holmes. His series is as close to the original stories as you can get. Superb production, acting and directing. The authenticity is even more poignant as Brett suffered a breakdown after losing his wife and stayed in-character during the rest of the series, living in the clothes he wore on set and hardly breaking character off set and in his personal life. Go and get the box set if you want a great treat. LINK

Peter Cushing played Holmes and the Doctor also, and Nicholas Briggs played Holmes in several audioplays. There are a few more who played Holmes and almost played the Doctor, Cumberbatch and Moody for example.

The Granada series remains one of my favourites bodies of work for television, so I heartily endorse your recommendation to folks that have never seen it to check it out. There will be a post over on our blog in the coming days in which I share a few of my own thoughts on why I chose him as our Lost Doctor.

Jeremy Brett stepped into the role of the Lost Doctor in the first adventure of our regenerated campaign... "Lost and Found"Outside of time, beyond space, exists a pocket of reality where the Time Lords of Gallifrey have buried remnants of their most advanced technology. This is the scrapyard where TARDISes come to die. The Master has brought the Doctor’s old Type 40 here in a bid to gain his freedom, and his escape may lead to ultimate victory over his eternal foe. The Doctor’s regeneration has gone dangerously wrong and his beloved TARDIS is behaving erratically. Unless John Riddell can make sense of a dimensionally transcendent space-time machine gone mad, none of them will escape this impossible graveyard alive! This was the first module written from scratch for our campaign. A lot had to happen in this inaugural adventure for our new Doctor. We had to introduce a brand new Doctor, find some way for him to escape from the control of the Time Lords, and, perhaps most significantly, introduce a means through which the Master could escape from the TARDIS. One of the great things about roleplaying games is that they allow you to embrace the unexpected. It's amazing just how much of this mythology shifting was accomplished with a roll of the dice! For instance, at the start of our previous adventure, "Destiny and the Doctor," the TARDIS was severely damaged, and the randomized damage impaired a number of its key systems (including the Isomorphic Controls and the Matrix Interface). That damage played an important role in setting up the new status quo and allowing the Lost Doctor to slip from the grip of the Time Lords. I wrote this adventure as the sort of Doctor Who episode I've always wanted to see. It was set primarily inside the TARDIS, allowing John Riddell to explore many of the time capsule's more exotic rooms and systems. (The closest TV equivalent is, no doubt, "Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS.") There was also a tense physical confrontation with the Master in the control room of his new TARDIS as well as a major puzzle-solving element to the plot. All in all, I'd like to think that it served to launch the Lost Doctor and an evolved mythology in unique fashion. A teaser story, episode guide entry, and artwork have been posted for the adventure. Saturday is Doctor Who day, of course. We played "Lost and Found" on Saturday, 27 August. The following Saturday we managed to keep things rolling with the Lost Doctor's second adventure, "Honour Bound." Expect another update soon.

The Doctor and Riddell braved a foreboding frontier in our most recent adventure... "Honour Bound"Held as prisoners of the infamous General Rannic, the Doctor and Riddell find themselves forced to serve the Second Sontaran Battle Fleet! Their mission: to locate an intelligence operative who has gone missing during a return from the front in a never-ending interstellar war. If the Doctor and his companion should refuse to live and fight as Sontarans it will mean summary execution, but the frontier planet on which their fateful rendezvous is destined to take place promises its own life-threatening dangers. Caeraedor is a world in the depths of a brutal ice age, a planet of monstrous predators and unforgiving elements. Concealed within its ice caves is a terrible secret that could mean victory or defeat for a desperate Sontaran Empire. It is truly astonishing that in fifty-three years, Doctor Who has never given us an on screen adventure featuring the Sontarans and the Rutans at war with one another. I figured we were long overdue. I also thought it would be fun to have the Doctor and Riddell rely on the Sontarans as allies rather than enemies. (The usual guessing game applies. I wonder if anyone can identify the old FASA roleplaying module used as the basis for this story. In this case, I adapted a module from an entirely different roleplaying game.) The players had a great time with this. The ice planet setting allowed John Riddell, in particular, to shine, given his skill at tracking and hunting. The TARDIS also picked up another traveler, as a Dreilyn NPC hitched a ride at the finish. A myth arc is beginning to take shape as the Lost Doctor's first season continues. What is the origin of the mysterious standing stones discovered on a number of disparate planets? The Rutans were unable to unlock their secrets, but the Doctor and Riddell may yet discover the horrible truth... As always, a teaser story, episode guide entry, and artwork have been posted for the adventure.

Hmm, I'm guessing it's a module from FASA's Star Trek RPG - but I'm not familiar with what was published for that game so I can't go any further than that. Something involving Klingons, I'd guess... You've narrowed it down! It was Star Trek: "Graduation Exercise" (1985), an adventure written for a team of Klingon cadets. Swap the Klingons for Sontarans and the Romulans for Rutans and you've got a wartime adventure for Doctor Who.

The TARDIS team went from cold to hot with their latest adventure... "The Edge of Extinction"Few things can survive in the Great Desert of Oomahn, but the resilient Rwaddi have made a home for themselves here, terraforming the arid land and harnessing an unpredictable atmosphere. Their scientific initiative may prove to be their undoing as an investigation into the potential causes of this pitiless planet’s last great extinction exposes a deadly contagion of extraterrestrial origin. Within the hulk of a mysterious object that fell into the desert centuries ago are the seeds of the all-consuming Krynoid. Now this verdant menace has been unleashed upon an unsuspecting population. Unchecked, it will consume the colonists and every last drop of water on their vulnerable world in its struggle to survive, bringing about a new extinction! Fortunately, another craft has crashed among the dunes, a brilliant blue box, and it carries three strangers who bring with them an arcane knowledge of such terrors. At the gates of the great city of Mastus, beneath a raging storm, a desperate battle will be fought between these chaotic forces from beyond the stars. It never rains in the desert, but it pours! The myth arc that binds the episodes of the Lost Doctor's first series is beginning to become more complex. A number of clues were on offer in this latest installment, featuring a desert planet that had recently undergone an extinction event. The Doctor and Riddell encountered yet more alien standing stones, as well as the insatiable Krynoid. As game master, my plan was to be relatively loose in planning this one. There were a number of possible paths and outcomes. The players made the most of it, racing about the desert, battling sand pirates, and waging all-out war on the evolving Krynoid. The epic climax saw the Doctor ordering a military air strike as Riddell, armed with a flame thrower, fought thrashing vines on the front line. The usual items have been posted for the adventure on our blog. Additionally, character sheets for both the Lost Doctor and Riddell are now online.

And that's when things started to get really weird... "The Life and Deaths of Gustaf Urnst"Gustaf Heinrich Urnst is a man whose name has fallen into legend. Once upon a time, the fabled writer, explorer, and occultist’s foolhardy forays into the great unknown left him stranded on twentieth century Earth. Now, the Doctor desperately needs his help in resolving a conundrum of cosmic scale. What is the origin of the mysterious standing stones discovered on a number of disparate planets? What secrets do their indecipherable hieroglyphics conceal? And what role do these alien objects play in bringing about mass extinction?
Arriving at Urnst’s New England estate, the Doctor and Riddell discover that the man is missing once more—along with great swaths of his house! In the cellar is a single stone stele, an alien artefact that pulses with a strange and dreadful power. In a flash the Doctor and his companion find themselves atop the Andes mountain range, fighting for their lives as they navigate a lethal labyrinth of blood-thirsty living rock. At its centre, John Riddell finds himself face to face with an old rival, and the Doctor discovers the horrible truth behind a mystery that has haunted him throughout his travels. There is a eldritch evil that has reached across the galaxy to deliver death to a hundred worlds. Here, on the planet Earth, it has touched the mind of Gustaf Urnst—and he has been hideously transformed.
The grand finale to the Lost Doctor's first season resolves a myth arc that began with his first episode. Throughout the season, on every planet that they visited, the Doctor and Riddell encountered standing stones marked by strange alien hieroglyphics. Wherever those stones were found, extinction inevitably followed. Of course, it was now time to discover these monuments on Earth. In crafting this story, I decided to pull together a number of disparate ideas and dangling plot threads, combining elements of The Trail of Cthulhu roleplaying game, the Virgin New Adventures, classic Doctor Who monsters, and figures from the backstories for our campaign's characters. The resulting story was as dark as it gets. (Indeed, one player remarked that it was downright "nihilistic!") For the climax, I chose to confront the players with an impossible moral decision. Naturally, they rejected the available options. After a heated debate and some serious brainstorming, they pooled their story points in order to resolve things in their own brilliant way. It was collaborative storytelling at its best. A teaser story, episode guide entry, and artwork have been posted for the adventure.

The Doctor and Riddell embarked on a fantastic voyage in our latest season opener... "Magla"Around a distant star orbits a world that is not a world, a planetary body unlike any other in the cosmos. Beneath its seemingly lifeless crust pulse living organelles, the anatomy of a vast and incomprehensible life form. The enigmatic Viyrans are coming to this fabled place in force, ignoring all attempts at communication, and their aggressive actions could have profound consequences for all inhabited worlds in the sector. With one of history’s greatest microbiologists at their side, the Doctor and Riddell dive into the roiling cytoplasm of an incredible biological frontier to learn their motives, but they may be too late. The legendary space amoeba known as Magla has awakened—and it must feed!I wrote this adventure from scratch, inspired by nothing more than a throwaway line from "Destiny of the Daleks." (It is a line typically attributed to script editor Douglas Adams and, really, it has his name all over it.) The Fourth Doctor told us that the planet Magla is actually an 8,000-mile-wide space amoeba. In this adventure, the Lost Doctor and Riddell learn the mind-boggling truth of the planet firsthand, donning spacesuits in order to dive into its cytoplasm. Given that the setting necessitated a great deal of cellular biology and scientific technobabble, I chose to include a suitable historical figure: Maurice Hilleman, vaccinologist, credited with saving more lives than any other scientist of the twentieth century. (Hilleman was brought into the action via a cracking teaser scene, written by DamagedGoods, available on our blog.) I was also keen to include the mysterious Viyrans, as their appearances in Big Finish audios have always intrigued me. The Vinvocci tourists aboard the cruise liner Helios helped to balance out the weighty ethical dilemmas with a bit of comedy. I have always been obsessed with science fiction stories that render the microscopic into the macroscopic, so running this adventure was something I'd been looking forward to for a long time. A teaser story, episode guide entry, and artwork have been posted for the adventure.

I've been eagerly waiting to hear of the Doctor and Riddell's next adventure, and this sounds like a belter.
I also find the Viyrans intriguing - their origins and abilities have never been clearly or fully explained, so much about them can be expanded on by the GM. Their relentlessness makes them almost a force of nature. By sheer coincidence I'm currently listening to Patient Zero, not quite their first appearance, but certainly one in which we learn most of what we do know about their background.

The Master returned to menace the Doctor and Riddell in our most recent outing, the epic morality play entitled... "The Wrath of Rassilon"Rassilon: father of Gallifreyan thought and the architect of Time Lord supremacy. Long after passing into the pages of history, he stands as a figure both feared and revered. For those who know of his works, his immortal influence is to be found in even the farthest corners of our universe. The Master and his mercenary minions, the Chelonians, have tracked a lost remnant of Rassilon’s Foundry to the teeming jungles of Arboramorensis. Facing an unassailable army and an inescapable vengeance, the Doctor and Riddell must decipher the ancient riddles of Gallifrey’s All-Father or risk allowing a power beyond imagination to fall into the hands of its most notorious renegade. This is a fantastic module! It's classic Doctor Who. (Our sincerest thanks to misterharry.) The players were hooked, of course, from the title. There was never a dull moment and the pacing was perfect. From start to finish, the Doctor and Riddell were caught up in a wave of action and adventure. Though the mythology at work has its roots in the Dark Times of Gallifreyan lore, this is balanced with a number of fresh new ideas, primarily involving the lush setting of Arboramorensis. The setting is always changing, however, as are the threats and conflicts. Most significantly, the trials and tribulations that our heroes had to face were all specific to their characters, and this led to some truly dramatic scenes. After an ominous absence, the robotic Master returned to seek his revenge. With him were the Chelonians, one of my favorite recurring villains from the novels. The setup also allowed me to ensure that Romana put in an appearance, as she continues to play an important narrative role in our ongoing campaign. My players, Adam and Erin, really threw themselves into the story, and luck was with them this April Fools' Day. Nearly every time I asked them to roll the dice, they came out on top! In the end, we all had a marvelous time. If you've never had a look at this module, seek it out. The Whovians at your game table will thank you. As always, a teaser, episode guide entry, and fresh artwork have been posted for the adventure. NEXT TIME: "Before the Storm"

I'm relieved you all had fun with the adventure. To be honest, The Wrath of Rassilon is the one I was least satisfied with when I completed it - I think I felt that the setting of Arboramorensis was sidelined too quickly. But the Chelonians are also one of my favourite alien races from the novels and I thought they'd be ideal foils for the Master - a little bit comic in concept, but deadly dangerous when needed. Anyway, really glad you enjoyed it! If anyone wants to check the adventure out, it's still available via the top link in my signature (plug, plug).

We had a lot of fun with this scenario, so if it's the one you were least satisfied with, then I'll look forward to playing or GM-ing the others all the more! Hedgewick is superb at making the gameplay as vivid and distinctive as possible, so Arboramorensis felt like a living, breathing backdrop that really enhanced the overall gameplay. Meanwhile, the Lost Doctor had fun nicknaming two of the Chelonians with ridiculous simplifications of their actual names; "Gary" and "Tulip" were less than impressed, but it certainly helped give them that comic edge! Bravo on The Wrath of Rassilon, then, and I can heartily recommend others to check it out.

The Ice Warriors return, not in "The Empress of Mars" but in... "Before the Storm" The CR 238 to Toronto is going to be significantly delayed. Boarding the train, the Doctor and Riddell learn that it has become the target of saboteurs. In the first-class dining car, panicked passengers are succumbing to an unconventional poison. Among them is Brigadier General C.G.I. Coupland, a senior military official who clings to consciousness long enough to reveal that he has been placed aboard the train to safeguard the Unified Intelligence Taskforce’s most closely guarded secrets. Backup is unlikely, for outside an unexpected snow storm is becoming a full-blown blizzard!
As the train is plunged into darkness and slows to a standstill, the Doctor and his allies set out to search its secure cargo cars. There they meet up with an old friend—one of UNIT’s extraterrestrial operatives—and uncover a cache of strange and powerful artefacts bound for UNIT’s Black Archive beneath the CN Tower in Toronto. Perhaps the most powerful of these is the ion drive, a salvaged spacecraft engine that has been modified by UNIT’s boffins to operate as a means of controlling the weather! As the storm intensifies and heavily armoured alien soldiers close in on the snowbound train, the Doctor begins to understand the strategic value of Coupland’s operation and the nature of the enemy that threatens it. The Ice Warriors of Mars have been monitoring UNIT for some time, and the 238 to Toronto represents a strategic opportunity that they will not fail to seize! While "The Wrath of Rassilon" represents a fairly linear narrative, this scenario was conceived following a looser, node-based design. The initial seed was provided by The Diary of the Doctor Who Roleplaying Games, though the greatest influence on the adventure-as-played may have been The Black Archive sourcebook from Cubicle 7. I read The Black Archive as I was preparing the module, primarily because I wanted UNIT to play a significant role. There's so much fascinating material related to the artifacts stored in the Black Archives, however, that I could not resist incorporating them into the plot. I also brought back one of our favorite guest stars, Flo the outcast Judoon (who we all remember from "Judoom!"). And, much to my surprise, the Doctor invited Flo aboard the TARDIS at the end. We now have a new companion! Though the Ice Warriors aren't terribly fascinating on their own, when you put them together with the heavily armed soldiers of UNIT there's bound to be some fireworks. As a result, the adventure ended with a shootout and some satisfyingly explosive action. Original fiction! Episode guide details! Fresh artwork! Check out the blog. NEXT TIME: "The Starmind"
