Hello all. While I have a regular RPG group that I'm part of, we're not playing Doctor Who yet. I hope to one day soon though. When we do, here's my idea for the campaign. Please feel free to comment or steal from it. Also, I thought up most of this a long time ago before learning about the 50th Anniversary Special, so hopefully nothing I'm thinking of doing gets too ruined.
It is the end of the Time War. The Daleks are about to destroy the Time Lords. The Time Lords are about to initiate the Ultimate Sanction and end all of time and space. The Doctor is in possession of the moment and is about to bring the war to an end, by taking out both sides.
I know that most of the people in our group would want to play time lords. So they're in the infirmary on Galifray. Suddenly what can only be described as a ripple in time and space opens up, and a man steps through.
"I'm Captain Jim Mercury, a time agent from a parallel universe. We just received a psychic message from our Doctor. Something went wrong, he lost the moment and the Daleks wiped out the Time Lords. They are destroying time as we know it. Please, we need your help!"
The group then has to steal a Tardis and rebuild Jim's universe crossing device (his was a one shot device). When they get to the parallel universe, they find some strange differences.
I've been reading up on the war of currents, when Edison and his rival Westinghouse were trying to get people to use either alternating or direct current. What if that was a real war, Westinghouse won, and Edison was killed? We'd see a very different world with wireless power transfer, wireless communication, geothermal energy. It does rely heavily on Tesla, who has become a bit of a crutch in science fiction work of late, but I think this is different because it is more grounded. It asks, what would the world look like if it embraced Tesla's ideas on power and energy transfer instead of Edison's? It doesn't make Tesla a warlock or mad scientist.
And that's the outline. The time lords now have to protect the time stream, fight the daleks, and fill the void, in a world where they don't have to worry about the cannon of the tv show!
