Last night I ran my first AITAS game on roll20.net, playing with a couple of guys I've never gamed with before, who never played the game before but did quickly scan the rules. One player took the Doctor pregen (I didn't think I'd get anyone to take the Doctor with all the traits he has), and another played as the student archetype named Edward. I used the Timetrapped! module found at homepages.bw.edu/~jcurtis/modules.htm and spiced it up by having Bill and Ted also trapped on the space station with the PCs. Not only was there the stress of moving about an enemy-controlled space station to find how to release the TARDIS from the time trap, but there was the stress of keeping Bill and Ted (who thought they were in a recording booth) out of trouble.
I have to admit the guys played things very clever. The student leaned toward more violent solutions, which caused clashes with the Doctor, but everything played out as you would expect it to on the show.
Having gone through a full game, I am blown away with how well this system catches the feel of the show in its mechanics. After the session I chatted with the players, and they commented how the Doctor with his sonic screwdriver is game breaking in how powerful he/it is, but we decided that on a futuristic space station the Doctor/screwdriver has a major advantage, but it would be much less effective in a low-tech setting.
For those of you who haven't done the Bill-Ted cameo, I can't recommend it enough. It worked far too well, especially with the Doctor's knowledge of history informing him who Bill and Ted are and that they are going to be the ones to bring peace to the Earth in the future.
Good times. I will certainly be running this again and will probably bring Bill and Ted Timetrapped! to conventions.
