Anyone watched it yet?

I saw it - not as good as the first two. It's just an elaborate stage to show the well worn, often used, yet again over-used moral dilemas that every other show has already dealt with. The ending was only marginally original.

Was lacking in something, though loved that the cyborg stayed to watch over the town. The teleporting effect was also cool.
Matt Smith is a really good actor.
I cheered for Amy telling the Doctor to be better!
Thought RTD handled the Doctor becoming more violent, because he is travelling alone, better.
Edit: Added some more of my opinions!

The last time the Doctor engaged in cowboy stuff was in the dreadful OK Corrall story in the sixties. Ballad of the Last Chance Saloon anyone? This was marginally better although the cyborg looked too much like Kryten . If you are going to do pastiche with silly western accents make sure it is a pastiche.

I suppose I had high hopes as this was one of only three non-opener-or-finale episodes the Ponds have left, so it feeling quite such a "normal" episode was both fitting and a bit of a letdown. Fine in a run of thirteen, but not spectacular.

I guess that would be The Gunfighters which I think is a great episode. So, A Town called Mercy? It was good. But just felt a bit too clean. And if seems as if they are now trying to push The 11th Doctor having a dark side in our faces a bit.

I liked it. The town looked great. I loved Ben Browder. I liked the Doctor's speech about his mercy. I liked Amy telling him off. Was it a bit formulaic? Yes. But i still enjoyed it.
Also, for my money 11 is far scarier than 10. When 10 got angry and holier than thou and genocidal, he monologued and posed. It was great acting and it was cool, but it was loud angry blustering angry lonely god stuff. When 11 decides he's had enough, he's quiet and determined. He just goes and does it [witness his execution of Solomon last week or dragging the alien doctor over the boundry to meet his death this week]. He doesnt give people much of a chance to stop him

The episode was dark. It's like the doctor is himself is getting darker and darker himself. I get some people complaining about a lack of subtlety, but at the same time it's a pointless complaint. Something to subtle for one person to get another person will complain is being shoved down their throat.
What's getting to me is how the intro is getting darker and darker. I think it's building to something, heck I'm pretty dang sure it's building to something super dark. I think it will have something to do with the departure of the Ponds. I think one of them is going to die, and the smart money is on Amy dying.

I agree with everything you say Kit - just that of the 3 eps so far, this is currently ranked 3rd. I do want to say that at least they have actual Americans this time in the show, which makes it far less cringeworthy My main beef is with the episode writer. The subplots are fine - the main plot should not have passed the editing process. There at least needed to be a character moment for the alien doctor between when he escapes the town and getting in the spaceship to commit suicide - where he puzzles over the choice and shows actual decision making. Sometimes - even in Doctor Who - a guest actor could have moments of character development by themselves with none of the regular cast present.

I thought it was very good thru the first two thirds then faltered. I thought the backstory was great but the wrangling over where to go with things once the ultimatum was laid down detracted from the overall quality.

I really liked how the doctor talked the kid down.

I loved the cheesy Ennio Morricone-ish music.

I've seen better, I've see worse. Toby Whithouse has written far better stuff but I find his Who to be lacking - IIRC this is the guy who wrote Vampires in Venice and the minotaur/hotel episode from last season. Sometimes I wish he'd stick to writing Being Human.
My daughter has been playing catch-up with the Farscape boxed sets and kicked herself when I pointed out who was playing the marshal. How they can resist not having other actors from the same show is beyond me.
Anyway, let's compare like with like. 3rd episodes of the current seasons. Last year we had "The Curse of the Black Spot". Good dialogue, weak episode. Year before that, "Victory of the Daleks." "Planet of the Ood" "Gridlock" You have to go back to "School Reunion" before you find a good 3rd episode. It's a weak spot in the series.
Going by this logic, next week should be pretty damn good...

Toby seems to lose strength when he writes Doctor Who. It's not bad, just kind of half-realised. It's almost as if he consciously tries too hard to force himself in a family-friendly mode. All he needs to do is write as he does for Being Human, remove the pre-watershed adult elements and then polish the edits.

I found this story to be the best so far of this season (having just watched episode 4 too).
