this is an idea based on the Dot Hack//sign video games and anime dothack.wikia.com/wiki/.hack//Wiki the Tardis lands in japan in the year 2008 The Doctor has come to check out the new VR MMO The World. Are the rumors true about people end up in a coma from playing The World. The only way for The Doctor to Find out is to play The World. interesting things the Players Getting to make two charcters one for the companion and one for The World some story ideas one the companions ends up in a coma ( most likely an Npc so no one gets left out of the game ) after being attacked by a strange monster. The doctor trying to reason with the rouge AI Morgana( the bad guy in dot hack) trying to stop the game company from pulling the Plug on The World Before the PC,s save those in a coma somebody please give some feed back on my idea

I am not familiar with .hack, but the second double book: The Good, the Bad and the Alien/System Wipe the second story System Wipe has a somewhat similar premise.
It isn't one of the best books and more aimed at children than the normal books, but it shows that Virtual Reality and the Doctor can mix.

Some back ground on The World taking from the dothack wiki
The World (ザ・ワールド, Za Waarudo) is the first massively multi-player online RPG since Pluto's Kiss. Developed for the ALTIMIT OS, The World had a lot of media hype, resulting in over 100,000 preorders being taken in November 2007. The World was sold online for download, and in the first day alone it sold 4,576,623 copies.
The World was created by the genius programmer Harald Hoerwick under the name Fragment. Fragment was released as a limited beta approximately nine months prior to the release of The World. The beta was stopped early for unknown reasons and The World was released shortly afterwards.
Game World
The World's storyline is based on the Epitaph of Twilight, an epic poem by the web author Emma Wielant. In the game the world has been under attack by monsters, which has forced the forces of good to retreat into fiercely defended cities and forts. Only adventurers (represented by the players) are allowed to penetrate the magical shields around these safe havens and battle with the monsters that lurk outside. These adventurers draw their power through their mastery of waves, symbols that are inscribed onto their bodies and equipment that allow them to channel the power of the elements into their bodies in the form of magical skills and abilities.

Would the sonic screwdriver still work in The World? Maybe the Doctor has to program something similar?
Things: * Network glitches. Someone's avatar flickers and disappears, just seconds later it reappears but the avatar is now controlled by a monster? * Bugs. NPCs that repeat the same thing over and over again. An avatars head slowly and unnaturally spinning around. * VIP-members, you know the kind, those that buy credits with real money to buy the best and exclusive gear. * People begging the players, and everyone else they can see for that matter, for money or credits.
