I'm not gonna panic about it until I hear it is cast, in production, and filming is occurring. Or Moffat tells me to. Whichever comes first.

They've got to get it past BBC branding and licensing yet. And we all know how long that takes.

I'm not seeing why the fans seem so up in arms over this. The Peter cushing movies didn't do any harm, in fact they might have got more people watching the series.
If they were going to stop making the series, then I'd be worried. But worst case scenario is that the film sucks and it gets ignored. I can't see it making any difference to the series.
Mind you, I quite liked the Paul McGann film, or at least what it was trying to do. Although the Master was utter rubbish. :-)

DWM dismissing it =/= it not being true.

DWM dismissing it =/= it not being true. It isn't DWM dismissing it. It's the BBC

Well, Dave Golder certainly seem to have an axe to grind with DWM there! Rivalry between SFX and DWM? Surely not!
Anyway, despite what he says in that article, the current reports seem to me to be little different that what has been rumoured for the past 20+ years now. Somebody in the film industry wants to make a Doctor Who movie! Nothing new there. The only difference is that this time that somebody is a bit more famous than most. But it still doesn't mean that anything will actually happen as a result. And if it does, it'll still take several years to get anywhere. It's just not worth getting excited about at this point.

Well, they seem somewhat different to me. I'm not saying anything will come of this, but I do think it's a relevant topic of discussion. Here's Matt Smith on the subject.

Makes more sense from whose point of view? Every investor/film-studio wants to make money from the movies they make. If it is a re-boot it would be a lot more accessible to people who don't know the series. I don't know how popular Doctor Who is in America, but if I were making a Doctor Who movie(if only I was ) I would do a re-boot. It would be a lot more sell-able to people who have never seen the series and unfortunately that is the majority of the customers. They wouldn't get a lot of the references and in-jokes. However, if I wasn't limited by real-life economics I would make it with the official Doctor and the official team. It would be canon. I remember seeing the first Peter Cushing movie and thinking: The Doctor a human that is not right, is it? for a minute and then enjoying the rest of the movie. It shouldn't be changed too much. I've had a terrible vision of some actor saving the companion by casually shooting Daleks with two revolvers. And with a typical American accent: "I am Doctor Who, nice to save you!"

I would avoid casting by stereotype. For instance: "Johnny Depp plays quirky characters. The Doctor is a quirky character. Johnny Depp should play the Doctor." "Tim Curry plays bad guys and has a goatee. The Master is a bad guy and (sometimes) has a goatee. Tim Curry should play the Master." Casting like this guarantees you won't get the Doctor or the Master, but Johnny Depp and Tim Curry.
The director should have a clear idea of the characters in the film, then audition actors who can accomplish what he wants. Odds are good that other actors can provide a better fit for a role than a high-profile actor chosen by stereotype.
