So, in your game (or as run-up to your game) you've got a TARDIS in desperate need of a make-over ... After the inevitable flood of chic Gallifreyan Interior Designers (and Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen) have left, what will your TARDIS look like on the inside? For that matter, what will it look like on the outside? I'm thinking of keeping it simple, with some under-stated yet elegant black ...

The PC Time Lord in my game uses a Victorian motif so he has a "wardrobe" - basically a large clothes cabinet.
I ran a playtest game with an NPC Time Lord called "The Handyman" whose TARDIS exterior looked like an old wooden tool shed like you would find on a construction site.

There are better ways to blend in to construction sites... And it would be a great (if somewhat silly) way to introduce a new companion.
"Thought there were only four portaloos? Oh, well. Rest are occupied..."

Sorry for the rather silly nature of my first post here, it's been a long morning already.

I ran a game where the Timelord was a keen gardener. His TARDIS looked like 2 trees growing close together with branches interlinked to form an arch. The arch was the doorway, stepping through with the key got you in.

I always thought the colin baker episodes where the doctor tried to repair the chemeleon circuit but ended up with the tardis picking random strange shapes(like a piano or an old fireplace facade) were funny, so with that in mind i think im gonna choose a tardis design thats abit strange and not the sort of thing you'd expect to see someone step out of.

Well, those are the exteriors sorted ... What about the interiors? What might a Gallifreyan Linda Barker have wrought?

Actually in the old FASA system days, I ran a campaign where the player of the Time Lord liked to dress in Bermuda shorts and loud Hawaiian shirts... and his TARDIS exterior was a Winnebago Camper.
This was actually a little before Spaceballs came out, so it was original for its time.
As for interiors, I've always like the interior of the 8th Doctor's TARDIS... that great fusion of Gothic and Steampunk.
I think for my new campaign, the TARDIS will begin in a very broken state... the exterior will be nothing more than a matte silver obelisk. Until the players can get the chamaeleon circuit in some sort of funtioning, it will stay that way. It will probably periodically malfunction after that too.
Interior-wise, I'm thinking a mixture of classic and new. White walls, light green console (as in the Pertwee era), but with brass and wood accents. The rondels will glow a warm gold. But because of the damage to it, there will be plenty of exposed wiring and a few cracked or shattered rondels. The central column .... I'm thinking crystal columns from the console top to the ceiling. There are crystals inside the columns that will move in a piston-like manner up an down when in operation.
I'm not 100% on board with the cental column, so I'm open to suggestions.

We have been playing the old FASA game for a number of years; Lord Macfadyan has a type 76 Tardis. It has been through the wars recently (not however a time war!) almost getting time rammed. Its chameleon circuit is on the blink so every thing it materialises as is green, and recently the vertical hold has gone. The interiors desktop theme is stone “They were sitting in the dim light of the TARDIS console room, a large chamber with backlit roundels. Everything seemed to be made of dark grey granite. There were stone archways circling the chamber forming a cloistered walkway around it. They all met at the edges of the large hexagonal power unit that hung over the control console. On three of the archways' pillars, a small face had been carved. Each face was different. The first was of a young man slightly nervous, with an air of neat prissy-ness about him. The second face looked altogether more cheerful. Round cheeks and a slightly bulbous nose gave him a perpetually jolly air. The third face was bearded and looked sternly across the console room as if disapproving of everything it could see. It was the face of Macfadyan himself. In one area there was no wall. Instead there was a grassy area complete with rocks and a waterfall and stream. Tall ferns seemed to go on till they vanished in the distance. Mist gently floated around the area. From somewhere a beam of sunlight shone through the mist, making the area a sea of tranquillity. There was an old fashioned, striped deck chair on the grass. In it, one of five cats could be seen curled up asleep. Four other cats were dotted around the room, reclining in ways that only cats find comfortable.” For more info go to www.staggeringstories.net/index2.html

I'm not 100% on board with the cental column, so I'm open to suggestions. Personally, and I'm not sure how practical this would be even for Gallifreyan Health & Safety, I envisage the console room as a huge spherical chamber, much like Cerebro in the X-Men movies ... ... except bigger. The external doors would lead, across a gantry, to the central platform where the console would be. The central column/time rotor would stretch from the ceiling way above, passing through the console and descending down to the floor below. I envisage a grand wrought iron spiral staircase descending from the central platform - wrapped around the central column - leading deep into the depths of the TARDIS where other rooms may be found. The console room walls would, of course, be hexagonal roundels. The entire room would act as the external monitor (think B5's Minbari viewing tech) Instead of crystals the column would be filled with the energies of the space/time continuum which would swirl gently when the TARDIS was at rest but would churn chaotically like a hurricane when the TARDIS was in motion, burning brightly red or blue depending on which direction in time the TARDIS was travelling. The console, and the platform it stands upon, would be standard Jules Verne brass and wood, and the platform would probably also have a comfortably plump and lavishly upholstered sofa or two That's the current plan, anyway

When I gamemastered the FASA game in the 80s, my player's main character was a Time Lord who went by "The Traveller", and whose TARDIS looked like this:

Okay, so maybe it would be a bit conspicuous.. On the plus side, no matter how bad your sense of direction is, it shouldn't be too hard to find.

That's just a little ... ostentatious ... for my tastes, I fear OTOH, I could totally go for one of the stone lions being a TARDIS. One of them materializing in a dense alien forest would be pretty cool ... ;D

Since it's been decided that one of my players is playing the 8th Doctor I guess it's going to be the 'Gothic Jules Verne' desktop setting to start off with.

That's just a little ... ostentatious ... for my tastes, I fear If you're going to be like that about it, how about some smaller alternatives? A sarcophagus - A garden shed - The back of a Ford Transit - A post box - Be a damn tight squeeze to get in, though. Best hope your Time Lord is being played by someone tiny like Ronnie Corbett or Tom Cruise. The classic London cab driver's shelter - A beach hut -

Since I'll be GMing this probably won't come up. But possibly as an NPC, maybe - so... As a descendant of Compassion and member of House Lolita, she could look like anyone (or thing, probably) - however I find it demeaning that she conforms to environments but Time Lords do not, so don't mind if she stays with one form (and would prefer it). Her control room would of course be mutually decided on, but I suspect something similar to the season 14 console room - but with more brass trimmings, some "matrix-esque" machinery, some chairs, and of course a subtle death/skull motif. Or possibly a separate room for rituals that's easier to clean

After the inevitable flood of chic Gallifreyan Interior Designers (and Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen) have left, what will your TARDIS look like on the inside? For that matter, what will it look like on the outside? During playtesting we had two different campaigns. In the first campaign the interior looked like a cross between the Eccleston/Tennant console room and the Superman film's Fortress of Solitude. Instead of stone, the columns and console were made of faceted clear crystal (with purple light faintly glowing within). We never established a consistent exterior in that campaign. In the second campaign, the TARDIS was a former War TARDIS. So it was very utilitarian and spartan. The exterior was simply a door. That's it. It would tend to materialize in a wall. The chameleon circuit would make the door look like doors from that era. We never landed anywhere that didn't have doors, but I imagine we'd have come up with something similar to a door. The inside was very submarine like; claustrophobic, limited space, low ceilings, no wasted space, etc. The only exception was the control room. It was a fairly large room with a moderately high ceiling. The floor was all cold, basement-like concrete (nothing fancy, no frills). The central console was slightly raised up. There was a handrail around the raised section. The console itself was again very utilitarian. Minimal switches and dials. Very "gray" console. Looked sort of like the control consoles on the 1960s Star Trek series (very dated, plan, with antiquated equipment).

Spent some time yesterday with friends, doing some plotting to play next week. My pal is planning to play a slightly action hero-ish companion to her kids' two Time Lords. Mum and daughter have decided that the TARDIS will look like this: With the interior being a fusion of the 'current' TARDIS aesthetic and the iPod. Little brother, who was off playing with Transformers, does not know this yet. I suspect that he will disapprove but he has already been outvoted.

I like the coke dispenser and the beach hut ! I will probably use a TARDIS that was designed for "educational trips" at the academy and the initial appearance (it will probably stay like this quite a while) will be this : mcaaron.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/london-bus1.jpg

Of course, what we fail to mention is that if the Tardis is working properly (Most of them do, it's just the Doctor's that doesn't) then the outside will look like something to tie it in to the surrounding area...

I rather like the Beach Hut idea. I have an image of a Time Lord dressed in cargo shorts, t-shirt and a bathrobe calling himself "The Dude" with a laid-back surfer-slacker motif. Throw in a perky female sidekick habitually wearing 1920's style bathing suits and a very confused Allied soldier fresh off the beach at Normandy, and that's a campaign I'd like to run...

Heh. Yeah, I think I'm obligated to stat up The Dude & Company. I don't know if I'll get to run that campaign, but maybe someone else can get some mileage out of it. Had to cancel my DWAITS order the first time. (Pesky trivia like electricity and heat and food, etc) but I've got a new order out and am looking forward to a box of Whovian goodness soonishly.
'Course, The Dude's Tardis has to have a bowling alley in it...
