How does the Doctor Who Adventures in Space and Time system hold up with one player and a GM? Anyone have experience good or bad with that kind of set up?

I've got no experience with it played that way, but I can see it would be fairly robust as a one player game. It doesn't use roles or classes and there is no need for skill specialisations of any sort, a character can be generic and have fun.
Not only that but the story points (very similar to fate points in Fate) allow a great deal of fudging (if you'll excuse the pun) when resolving tasks and other difficulties.
The system doesn't get in the way of the drama.

My only experience of 1-on-1 play was with Call of Cthulhu several years ago. Setting aside the rules and style differences between that and DWAITAS, the main problem I think is that if you have a group of players, they feed off each others ideas. So they'll tend to work out problems quicker, come up with more imaginative plans, etc. If you've one player, you may find that as a GM you'll need to give them a few more nudges in the right direction - it's more of a collaboration between GM and player.

It works very, very well. I'm currently running a one-on-one campaign - we've played more than fifteen episodes (including three with a very occasional "guest player character" but the campaign itself and its storyline were tailored for one-to-one play). So far, it's been absolutely fantastic - but I'm lucky to have a remarkable player, who is not afraid of exploring her character's emotions and relationships with other people. I'd say that the biggest difficulty here is to find the right player (I'm married with mine ;D) I've posted various stuff about this one-on-one campaign ("Lady Penelope's Odyssey") on my DWAITAS Blog A Journal of Impossible Things : dwaitas.blogspot.com...including the following post which deals specifically with that particular playing style: dwaitas.blogspot.com/2010/07/campaign-notes-making-of-time-lady.html

One thing I'll note is that a one-on-one game with a keen player will go fast. With no other players to chat to in or out of character, and a lot less to distract them, one player will gallop through adventures unless they get stuck.

I'm thinking of running a 1-on-1 game myself to try and get my girlfriend into RPGs.
I've run Star Wars 1-on-1 games (D6 & D20) with friends in the past without problems, can't see there being a problem with Doctor Who.
I'm actually thinking of have her playing the companion and I run The Doctor. And obviously she will get cut off from The Doctor during the adventure and will end up saving him. As she's a Tennant fan I will probably use Doctor 10, plus we have his stats already.

My only experience of 1-on-1 play was with Call of Cthulhu several years ago. Would personally love to try a 1-on-1 CoC game at some point. A 1-on-1 Doctor Who game would be kinda neat too, probably, but I'd agree that it would largely depend on the player how well it works out. I'm guessing the setup for such a game would be Time Lord character (the GM) plus one companion (the player)?

It would work similar to the 2009 specials, I imagine.
